This town is alive- the wind calls me friend and brings me gifts, brings me poems, brings me secrets. The wind tells me what you don't dare say to my face. (I know much more about you than you do about me.) The wind warns you think you'll find me alone. I warn that I won't be alone with you; you'll be alone with me.

This town is alive- the pavement burns sigils into bare feet. Some are blessings. Others are less benevolent. The road knows where you're running to before you do. Sometimes it leads you there*. (*but sometimes "there" is a concrete divider ; sometimes "there" is the middle of the intersection at the exact moment an 18-wheeler blows through a red light ; sometimes "there" means nowhere, ever again)

This town is alive- the people all know it, somewhere in the back of their minds, but they carry on nonetheless. Huddle in the churches, crowd the bar, make their families here, because this is home, and then the ax comes down. There's a new obituary sitting on the countertop of the local gas station every week, and despite the fact that everyone knows everyone around here, you never recognize the faces. (does a calf recognize its mother when she's cut down to a steak?)
