Chapter 1: Lost
The snowy white owl dashed through the woods hastily, carrying her baby owlet on her back. The black streaks that went throughout her wings complimented her white feathers. Her child, however, looked a bit different. Instead of inheriting her mother’s beautiful features, she
had gotten her father’s plain, white feathers. Unlike other owls, there weren't any dots, lines, crosses, or zig zags to decorate her feathers.
Just plain white feathers. Nothing spectacular about it.
Another flaw about this particular young bird was that she had a deformed leg from birth. It was hard for the little baby to move, and usually got in the way of flying lessons.
The owlet’s name was Elodie, meaning marsh flower. Elodie might not have the best features, and she may lack in physical strength, but she was still the apple of her parent’s eyes.
All of a sudden, another owl knocked into Elodie’s mother, sending the pair spiraling towards the ground. Elodie’s mother screeched as she was pummeled into the snow-covered ground. Elodie, who was nestling in her mother’s feathers, had been knocked off of her mothers back.
Panic swirled through the panicked mother’s body as she picked herself up from the ground and desperately searched for her child. But alas, no matter how hard she looked, nor how hard she cried, or how hard she yelled, there was no trace of her dear child.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
The owlet slowly raised her small head as she took in her surroundings. It was quite obvious to her that she had fallen off her mother’s back. Fear quickly took over Elodie’s body, making her shake uncontrollably. All she could see was darkness, snowflakes sprinkling onto the ground, and something Elodie hated from the deepest depths of her heart.
Snow.
Snow was something repulsing to Elodie. It reminded her of her first flying lesson.
It was as clear as a bright, sunny day.
Her mother was nudging Elodie out of the nest, despite the young owlet’s cries of terror. Both Elodie and her mother knew she couldn’t fly, nor had a chance to fly because of her crippled leg. Yet, her mother held up her beak and heavily brought it down on Elodie’s head, making the owlet squeal in pain while jumping out of the nest.
Elodie’s life flashed before her eyes as she dove towards her death. The last thing she saw was the pretty color of white, sparkling snow before she landed on a familiar softness.
To Elodie’s relief, the soft thing she had landed on was her mother’s back. Even though Elodie’s mother scolded her about how she didn’t even try to fly, Elodie was grateful that she had lived through that traumatic experience. Being weak meant nothing to the small owlet. The only thing that was of an importance to Elodie was surviving the frustrating, deadly challenges of life.
But that was the problem. That stupid flying excerise was the whole reason Elodie had her feathery face covered in snow. It was the reason Elodie was snatched away from her mother without a single warning. It was the reason Elodie was an outcast.
The owlet lifted her face out of the freezing snow and rolled over onto her back. Carefully, Elodie gradually lifted herself up into a sitting position. She finally took a long look at the scenery around her. Elodie had fallen somewhere in the forest, that was for sure. Tall, lingering trees littered Elodie’s vision. Soft speckles of watery snow trickled down from the sky with a majestic look about them. One particular snowflake landed on Elodie’s beak, which made the young owl chirp in surprise. But something was peculiar about this snowflake. Instead of having a hexagonal form like every other snowflake, it was queer-looking. It took on the form of something smooth and round. Bland, yet interesting. It reminded Elodie of herself. An outcast to the others of the same breed.
It was disappointing when the snowflake eventually got blown away into the dark abyss of the night. It gave Elodie a calming reassurance and warmth that was now gone. -
I made a few changes such as the deformed leg was supposed to be crippled. I may have not changed that in a few paragraphs though- :,)
