Rayne screamed, “Why are we here?”
His plea for help seemed to fade into the darkness.
“You, Red, are here to play my little game,” a voice boomed. The voice seemed to emanate from all around Rayne, making him feel small and pathetic.
“No! I refuse!” Rayne tried to punch the voice, but his fist slammed into a solid cement wall. He winced as blood poured in a malevolent waterfall from his fist.
The blood expanded and enveloped his body in a new red suit.
“That’s too bad,” the walls said, “because you’re already playing it.”
The surrounding crewmates inclined their heads, a blank stare enveloping their faces and blocking any of their emotions from showing.
“We,” they said in unison, “are players of the Mirrorstone’s game.”
Chapter 1
Rayne wiped his mouth on his shirt, leaving a red anomaly on his suit. “Red!” Brown shouted. “Can you—” He faltered when he saw the red stain on Rayne’s suit; almost like blood, Brown thought.
The only thing Rayne could remember was that a dash of brown had obscured his vision, and a loud horn sounded. Within a minute, all the different colors had gathered; two blueish colors; Green and Black grinning mischievously and winking at each other like they shared a joke; Pink staring at White uneasily. Yellow and Purple nervously shuffled around the table.
Brown spoke into a megaphone, pointing at Rayne accusingly. “Red, what do you have to say for yourself?” Words streamed from Brown’s mouth, but they didn’t seem like they were his. He stared at Rayne blankly. His suit obscured most of his features, but he had a mop of purple hair sticking out to one side. The way his lips moved seemed too robotic; too calculated and forced.
Rayne interrupted Brown’s lecture. “Look, man, that was just ketchup,” he said, though he didn’t seem so sure himself. -
"My name is not man," Brown hissed. "I am Brown." Rayne sighed. "Just—" He threw his hands up in exasperation. "I'm going to the bathroom." Brown called after him, "Targhi do not urinate. Please remain seated." Rayne stormed off to the reactor anyway, searching for a bathroom fruitlessly. The closest thing he could find was MedBay.
A scream of agony made everyone on the ship flinch. Even Brown looked alarmed. -
"What now?" Rayne demanded, quickly running back to Brown. His expression softened when he saw Brown’s panic showing. "Let's go, Brown." Brown trembled as Rayne dragged him along to find a lifeless body. Rayne knelt down and saw that there was a note on it. Quickly snatching it up and deciphering the messy handwriting, he decided it read: I’m what you see in yourself.
-
Rayne spat on it. "I hate riddles." The note flitted off into MedBay and it disappeared into a vent. Brown glared at him. "That could have been a lost artifact!" "It was just a stupid piece of paper," Rayne seethed.
-
Brown’s glance remained steely, but he took it off of Rayne. "Listen, Red—" he made the "I'm watching you" sign—"You’re not off the hook yet." Brown’s eyes gleamed. In a desperate hope to stay alive, Rayne stepped on the mushy dead body. As if in a trance, Brown walked to the emergency meeting table, and within seconds, everyone else was there too. Rayne pounded his fist on the table. "I think B-brown tried t-to kill me!" he declared.
