bustling crowd of teenagers. I watched as the other students sighed in relief, or disappointment. Some of them high-fived, others teared up. I just waited, and hoped that I wouldn’t be one of the ones who was disappointed.
Finally most of the students dispersed and Hazel and I were able to see our test scores. Hazel grinned. “I got a 92!” She exclaimed. I smiled and hugged her briefly with one arm. “That’s great!” I said to her.
Then I checked mine. I ran my index finger lightly down the paper until I found my name.
Camryn M. Hayle - 68%
“f---…”
Dismay crashed over me as I read my results. I read them over and over again, hoping helplessly to see something different. Thankfully I didn’t fail, but I knew that my mother would be disappointed in me. Silently disappointed. And that was much worse than her simply getting angry.

“So, are you gonna come out to your mom anytime soon?” Hazel asked me as we walked off of the bus.
“Yeah. I feel like I should. I mean, it’s been two months; I feel like I’ve kept it hidden from her for too long.” I replied. Hazel nodded and hugged me tightly. “I wish you all the luck in the world,” she said. A small tear slipped down my cheek and I managed a smile.
“Thanks,” I mumbled.

“You got a 68%?” Mother asked. I nodded solemnly while keeping my icy blue gaze on the floor.
All my mother did was sigh, shake her head in quiet disappointment, and walk out of my bedroom where we were alone. I sucked in a breath. Everything in my void of emotions was screaming at me to do nothing and to not tell her, but my mind shut them down and took control of my being. I turned around with a confident face and looked up slightly to look at my mother who was walking out.
“Mom,” I began. “I need to tell you something.”
She turned around and stared at me in expectation. “Yes?” She asked.
“I’m gay.” I said quickly before bolting out of the room and running out of the house, dashing down the streets of my neighborhood all the way to Hazel’s house, leaving my mother standing there in blatant bewilderment. -
Bro, how you so good at writing?!
Love this!! :D <3 -
Aww tysm Kris! That means a lot
Honestly it just took a while of practice, like most things do. I look back on some of my old writing and it SUCKED lmao -
Here's chapter 2 of Rainbow Child. It's called GSA. Imma just put all of it in and then put the rest of it in where it was cut off
I slept over at Hazel’s house that night. There was no need to say anything; I simply nodded at her and she knew exactly what I meant.
I woke up to the smell of warm waffles, artificial syrup, and chocolate. It was something I haven’t smelled in quite a long time; my mother stopped cooking breakfast for her kids when they stopped waking up early enough to eat it. I smiled and sat up, slipping gracefully off the guest bed and onto my feet. I winced as my bare feet made first contact with the cold hardwood floor after spending a night under the protection of warm covers.
Tip-toeing into the kitchen, I caught sight of Hazel’s mother at the granite counter, bent over a steaming waffle iron.
“What’s for breakfast?” I asked, my voice quiet as it was still getting used to speaking again after hours of sleep. Hazel’s mother turned around and flashed me a genuine, tired smile.
“Belgian waffles. And good morning Camryn.” She said. I nodded and smiled.
“Sounds delicious. And good morning to you too, Mrs. Rivers.” I responded softly.
“Oh, there’s no need to be so formal. Call me Ashley. Also, your mother called last night. I told her you were spending the night here and she said she was okay with it; but she wants to talk to you sometime today.”
I stiffened at her words but I nodded and attempted to hide my dread. “OK,” was all I said before making my way back to the guest bedroom and changing from the pajamas Hazel lent me to my oversized grey sweater and denim shorts.
When I came back downstairs, both Hazel and her mother were sitting at the dining table, eating their breakfast and conversing quietly. I hopped over to the kitchen and grabbed a plate of waffles.
“Hey Cam!” Hazel greeted cheerfully as I sat down beside her. I grinned at Hazel.
“Hey Haze,” I said. “Mom told me that your mom wanted to talk to you.” Hazel said, taking a large bite out of her waffle. I pursed my thin lips and nodded, looking down at my hands that laid still in my lap.
“Might I ask why you came here to stay the night all of a sudden and whatnot?” Hazel’s mother asked, butting into the conversation. I stayed silent, not wanting to speak. Luckily, Hazel stepped in for me.
“Um, Cam came out to her mom. She’s gay.” She said to her mother.
“So, what should we do today?” I asked Hazel. We had both eaten breakfast and were now sitting on her twin bed, on our phones and chatting.
“Well, I have a GSA meeting at 2 today. You could come if you want.” Hazel said in response.
“GSA? Is that Gay-Straight Alliance?”
“Yeppers!”
“So you go there to support the LGBTQ+ people?”
“Uh-huh.”
“Cool. I mean, I- I- guess I’ll go.” I said. Hazel glanced up from her phone and caught my eyes with her grey-ish blue ones.
“You don’t have to go if it’ll make you uncomfortable,” she told me gently.
I shook my head.
“No, I’ll go. I need something to do but I don’t want to do anything without you.” I said to her, a small but reassuring smile resting on my thin lips. Hazel nodded and smiled. “OK,” she replied.
* * *
“OK girls, we’re here.” Hazel’s mother said happily, pulling the silver minivan to a stop in front of a two-story suburban home. Hazel smiled and hopped out of the car. She held her hand out for me to grab and I smiled as well, gripping it and keeping my grip on it as we walked up to the house. Hazel rang the doorbell and after a few minutes a girl about our age opened it.
“Hey Hazel! Who’s this?” The girl said in greeting.
“Hi Emily! This is Camryn.” Hazel responded, gesturing slightly to me who stood beside her, our hands intertwined. Emily smiled cheekily.
“You two are cute together,” she commented. My icy blue eyes widened and my face turned bright red.
“W- what? No, we’re not dating! We’re just friends!” I exclaimed rather loudly out of surprise. “And besides, Haze is straight.”
Emily creased her dark eyebrows and nodded slowly, seeming obviously confused. But she shrugged it off and gestured for Hazel and I to come in. “We’re about to start,” she said. I walked inside with Hazel and saw about fifteen or more people sitting around the living room. I stiffened like a board; I didn’t know that there were so many people here. And they were all looking at me. No, no, no, I can’t do this.
“Sorry Haze,” were the only words that I mumbled before slipping my hand away from hers and running out the door. I ran down the street. I looked for Hazel’s mother’s car, but I couldn’t spot it. It must’ve already left. Damn it, I thought to myself.
I bolted down the fairly empty streets and ran all the way down to the Starbucks. I ordered a tall decaf cappuccino and waited. Once I received my drink I headed outside and sat down at a park bench nearby, sipping the piping hot coffee.
“Cam!” A voice called out. I turned around and saw Hazel. Her pale forehead was dotted with sweat and she was panting noticeably. She plopped down beside me on the hard, metal bench and stared into my eyes. “You could’ve told me if you were uncomfortable, ya know,” she said softly to me. Her voice was so gentle, so kind. My heart softened a bit and I stared back at her.
“I’m sorry. I couldn’t,”
Hazel motioned for me to put down my coffee and pulled me close, placing her arms around my neck in a hug. “Don’t be sorry, you didn’t do anything wrong whatsoever,” she stated. I smiled and threw my arms around her neck as well.
“Thank you,” I muttered softly as a tingling sensation made its way along my scalp.
What..?
* * *
“Camryn. Do you think your sexuality matters to me? I still love and support you all the way; never forget that,” my mother said to me as I began to tear up in front of her. “It just came out of the blue; I was surprised, that’s all.”
I looked down at the floor.
“I’m sorry…” I muttered.
Mother looked at me, her face contorted with empathy, and gently tugged me into a warm embrace. I smiled softly and hugged her back, my arms clinging tightly around her back.
“Don’t be sorry; never be sorry for that,” she said to me, her voice as quiet as a pin dropping, as smooth as butter.

“So, you’re lesbian?” Renee asked curiously as I entered our room and plopped down on my bed, brushing my dirty blonde hair that had become inherently tangled after running.
“Yup,” I said in response, popping the ‘p.’
“That’s cool,” Renee said. “I actually was suspecting it; I mean, you’ve had a big crush on that girl for about a month or so.”
I froze. “W- what?”
“You heard me. That girl, Hazel. Your friend. Though it seems as if you want to be a bit more than friends,” Renee said in a teasing voice. My face flushed bright red and I shook my head vigorously.
“I don’t like Haze,” I stated firmly.
“Mhm, sure you don’t.”
I scoffed and turned my head to see a small polaroid photo of Hazel on my bedside table that softened my expression. She was grinning madly, riding on the back of a horse. That was the day we spent at the farm and rose horses. The picture always made me smile. All the pictures of her did. No… I thought. I- do like Hazel…
And she’s straight. -
Hey look, it didn't get cut off! :D
Lol it's a short chapter -
Chapter Three - Isaac King
It was now three days after I went to GSA with Hazel. Or- more like I almost went there. I was sitting on my bed with my golden lab, Autumn, lying beside me, her head resting in my lap. I smiled lightly as she looked up at me with her warm brown eyes.
“You want a treat?” I asked her. Knowing that she couldn’t answer but knowing that she would always appreciate a good treat, I reached over to where I keep a small, tin Altoids box full of dog treats. “Here you go, girl,” I said as Autumn ravenously devoured the treats from my hand. By the end, my palm was coated in a thin sheet of slimy, transparent slobber, but it didn’t gross me out as much as it would other people. I’ve gotten used to it; I’ve had Autumn for six years, ever since she was a newborn.
Autumn eventually fell asleep on my lap, and I was left to sit still. I received a ding from my phone and I glanced down to see who had texted me when I saw the name Haze. I smiled slightly and unlocked my phone to see her text.
Hihi! Do chu wanna hang out at the Mad Batter in a bit?
My smile grew. The Mad Batter bakery. It has sort of become our hangout over the past few years. We’d grab a pastry and a cup of coffee and we’d plop down on the cushiony chairs, sinking into the plush velvet and closing our eyes, finally relaxing after our oh-so hectic lives.
Lol do you even need to ask me? I replied.
XD ok, so do we wanna meet up there at 2:00 maybe? She said.
Sounds great :) cya there
UwU cya!
* * *
I was wearing a black Aeropostale t-shirt and light-colored ripped jeans with whiet converse as I gently nudged open the door to the Mad Batter bakery. I inhaled deeply and closed my icy blue eyes for a minute as I entered. I did this every time I walked in. As I inhaled, bliss and serenity flooded into my chaotic mind and I sighed in relaxation. The store smelled of fresh vanilla, books, and espresso powder.
Looking around, I noticed that Hazel hadn’t yet arrived, so I decided to order my coffee and pastry early. I walked up to the counter and waved hello to the woman behind it. Her long black hair was slicked back into a tight bun and her grey eyes were kind and endearing. Her pale face had its fair share of wrinkles, but the woman herself was still stunning in her warm and homey atmosphere that she carried around her.
“Hi Sophia!” I greeted the lady with a smile.
“Camryn, nice to see you! Would you like the usual I presume?” Sophia greeted in response. I nodded.
“Yes please,” I told her. Sophia smiled, nodded, and prepared me a large apple fritter and a tall decaf cappuccino. After I got my food I plopped myself down onto one of the crimson red velvet chairs, my plate on my lap and my round, white mug on the miniature table beside me.
I heard a door creak open behind me and I turned my head to see Hazel walking through the door wearing a grey-ish blue t-shirt and a denim jacket along with a flowy white skirt and black combat boots. She walked into the store with grace and ordered her food(a thin slice of blueberry pie and a french toast latte), then bopped over to where I was and sat down across from me.
“Hey Cam!” She greeted cheerfully as she took a sip of her latte. She winced. “Hmm, I think they forgot the sugar. Hold on, lemme get a sweetener.” She got up and trotted up to the counter.
I heard the door open again and I turned to see who it was. Walking in was a boy my age with messy dark brown hair and mischievous pale green eyes. I knew who it was as soon as I saw him; he was Isaac King. In other words, the most popular guy in our school. Okay I’m kidding. The story would be too cheesy if he was the popular dude. Isaac was basically the school pervert. Most known for sneaking into the girl’s locker room last year, everyone knows to steer clear.
That is, everyone besides Hazel.
I forgot to mention that Hazel had just transferred to my high school recently, so she actually was never aware of Isaac. As Hazel received her latte sweetener, she spun around to face Isaac.
“Hey there,” he said to Hazel with a smile. Hazel tilted her head up to glance up at Isaac and smiled.
“Hi!” She greeted him.
“I’m Isaac King. Who might you be?”
“My name is Hazel. Hazel Rivers.”
“Pretty name,” Isaac commented softly.
“Do you want anything?” Hazel asked him kindly.
“Um, yeah, I was just wondering if you’d like to get some lunch sometime, Hazel.”
Hazel’s pale cheeks tinted pink and she nodded.
“Sure. When?”
“I’m not free much this week, but I’m free tomorrow at 12:00,” Isaac told her. Hazel fiddled with her bracelet.
“But, I- I have a thing with Cam then,” she said, glancing over to me. I understood the way she was looking at me. Her expression blatantly said, “Can we postpone this one time?”
I sighed and nodded as a sign of ‘yes’. Hazel grinned sheerily and turned back to Isaac. “Sure, I’d love to go then,” she said to him. Isaac smiled and nodded.
“Perfect. I’ll pick you up then.”
“Perfect. See ya.”
Hazel smiled and trotted back to our table, jumping onto her chair with such force that it scooted the chair over half a foot. She burst out into laughter at this but I kept a straight face. I was in serious mode, and nothing funny could change that.
Bitter. Everything was bitter. Not my coffee, but- well- no, my coffee tasted bitter, but I knew it was only my mind telling me that because it wasn’t bitter five minutes ago. But now everything was bitter. My emotions, my mind, my cappuccino, everything. I knew something wasn’t good. Isaac was targeting Hazel, and I knew she didn’t realize it.
“This is exciting! I can’t wait for tomorrow.” Hazel said, sipping her latte.
“Yeah, about that,” I began. “I- Haze, I don’t think it’s a very good idea to go out with Isaac,” I told her. Hazel’s light eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
“Why?”
“I- I just don’t like him. I’m telling you, it’s not a good idea.”
“Cam, I told you before, quit being such a downer! I mean, let’s look on the bright side: someone actually likes me!”
The only words that floated through my mind were, I like you… -
Lol this looks like a really small amount of words but it's around 3 pages on Google Docs
That's still a little bit but it's not like a tiny amount. It just depends on how long you like your chapters -
Hmm
I'm gonna redo my library thread
So I can give it a fun name lol -
You are a wonderful writer!

And Hijacked definitely sounds like a great book!
