Thread Topic: The Love Letter

Today is the anniversary of my father's death. Every year, I write him a "love" letter talking about how we've been and what's going on in our lives, as if he's just off on a vacation somewhere. Like he could return any day and wrap me in a tight bear hug, smelling like wood shavings and soap.
Every Father's Day is a stinging reminder of how he's gone and he will never take me to baseball games to cheer for the Bluegrass Bulls, or take me on fishing trips that I always took for granted, or tell me thay he's proud of me. It's not fair how just when you think your life is perfect, something comes along to tear things apart. Chris Merit was shot for the paper in his pocket, missing the train that would take him to his wife who had been waiting to tell him that she was pregnant with his son.
I don't know what I would have done without Nick. He was so small and so pure, with his father's green eyes and his mother's beautiful black curls. He had definitely gotten the good end of the gene pool. He distracted me and Mom from our grief and helped us live again.
I walk over to my desk and pull out a clean sheet of paper from its folder, using a pen to write the letter in glistening black ink.
Hey Dad, it's me again.
We all miss you a lot. You would think that Nick wouldn't be able to miss someone he never knew, but it's just as hard for him as it is for me. He never knew what it was like to have a dad, but I'm teaching him how to write so he'll be able to send you letters too.
Mom has been in and out of jobs recently, but I think she's finally found the right one. She's found time to follow her passion: cooking. She makes some pretty weird stuff sometimes, but we eat it all up because we love her and it makes her so happy.
Nick made a lot of friends at school this year and he always has some little kid over to play. He plays Little League now and Mr. Gillis is their coach. Can you believe it? Something strange has happened in that little old man since Ruthie was born.
I've been doing pretty good. I haven't done much this year, but I've been drawing more and more and I think I'm getting better. I miss you more than you can imagine and I love you more than words can say.
Sincerely, Hannah Merit. -
Thank you so much! I appreciate it <3
