What We Chose
Who said we couldn’t be together?
Apparently everyone did. But I was there by his side, and I wouldn’t leave until he was okay. But what did we mean? Was it meant to be? Or just luck that we happened to bump into each other on the rainy day at the café?
Whatever it was, we didn’t care. As long as we had each other we would be alright, nothing could ever take us down.
Today we would meet at the café where we first met. I waited anxiously by the door, promising myself that I wouldn’t enter until he showed up, a smile on his face and bright happy eyes that always seemed to make me melt.
Thirty minutes later, and he still hadn’t come. She was slightly impatient and her shoe tapped against the concrete outside, did he forget? Taking out her phone, she called him- no reply. Texted him- not even read. And sent him voicemail after voicemail- still no reply.
It was getting late, she decided to head home, maybe he had slept in.
Everyday she had come by the café, same time, everyday. She waited and waited, but he never showed up. No replies to her texts and her phone calls left unanswered. It made her want to shrink, was he alright?
One day, she waited at a small table outside the café, waiting for him like she always did. People began to accept them, the more days that passed by. Everything began to become a time lapse, day after day nothing happened. She began to lose hope, the fire in her heart dying down as if she had lost him.
They were connected, something between them that strung them together like beads on a glass beaded necklace. But she could feel it, energy depleting rapidly as days sped by.
A month later, nothing.
Two months, not a sign.
Three months, nearly hopeless.
So what kept bringing her here? She didn’t know, but she continued to do so until she would finally see him again. But she wanted to cry, he was still here, right?
On a rainy day, the girl could be seen outside the café, underneath the large cover that protected the customers from rain and sun. But something was different in the air, something dull and lifeless, nothing happy about it.
And that day was the day her hope flickered off like a dying light, it escaped her and was off to someone else. Something struck her, a feeling she couldn’t shake.
The girl felt it, the hope gone, her spirits broken. But she still came, and another week passed. Then, something weaved it’s way into the air, and pierced her like nothing had before. A tear fell down her color-drained cheeks. She choked on her tears, and buried her face in her hands.
The girl felt it, the hope lost, her spirit killed, and her love shattered.
