The Day the World Went Black
The young boy eagerly jumped into bed, kicking at the blankets with his feet so he could get under all of the layers. His father laughed as he watched and tucked a thick, old book into his armpit.
"Someone's eager tonight," his father said, reaching over to pull all of the covers up to the boy's chest.
"It's time to start the next story!" He shouted, wiggling excitedly. "It took us a whole week to finish the other one.."
His father nodded, moving to sit at the foot of the bed. He moved the book into his hands, patting the cover. "Well, it's the history of this realm, son. There's a lot to everything in here."
The boy gazed expectantly at him, pulling the blanket up to his nose. His eyes shun with vibrant excitement.
"Alright," his father said, setting the book on his lap and opening the cover. The smell of the old, worn out pages wafted through the air. Both the boy and his father adored the smell. He slowly slid his finger down the page, glancing at the title of the stories and their page numbers. "So, we just finished the story about the Great Battle, which means we're onto.."
His father stopped as his finger fell onto the next story's title. He tilted the book upwards, squinting at it. When he confirmed what it was, he slowly set it down, looking over at his son. "I'm afraid we'll have to skip this one, buddy," he said softly.
"What!?" The boy said, sitting up abruptly and throwing the covers aside. "No! We've never skipped a story!"
"I just don't think this is a story for your age, Travis," his father explained. "I don't want you to get sad, or.. Be scared of the world."
"I won't," Travis whined, crawling over to his dad and latching onto his arm. "I promise I'll be brave and I won't find any of this story scary."
His father glanced back down at the book, debating the validity of Travis's statement. The kid had been through a lot, but some stories were just too much. He looked back to Travis, immediately noticing the tears that were starting to well up in his eyes.
"Don't do this to me, bud," his father said, giving him a pained look. "Don't give me the crocodile tears.."
"These aren't c-c-crocodile tears," Travis whimpered, tugging on his father's sleeve. "You're b-breaking my heaaaaaaart, daddy..! I'm so biiiiiiiiiiiig.. I wanna hear the stoooooooooory!"
His father moved his arm, gently wiping at his tears. "Alright, alright," he said, patting Travis's cheek. "I'll read it.. But you have to promise me that if it gets too scary, you'll tell me, alright?"
"It won't get scary!" Travis retorted, his tears seeming to stop immediately. He hugged his father's arm tightly, bouncing a bit.
"Travis," he said sternly, giving him a look. "Promise me."
"I promise," he replied, a grin forming on his little face. "But I'm just sayin', it's not gonna happen.."
His father sighed and ran a hand through his own hair. "Alright, aright. Get back under the covers."
As Travis scrambled back under the bed sheets and his blanket, his father slowly flipped to the first page of the story. He hadn't realized it at first, but it was the last one in the book. When he finally got to the page, he ran his fingers along the title. It was starting to fade drastically, but he could still read it clear as day:
The Day the World Went Black
Ifilar's Fall -
"What's this story about?" Travis asked, resting his head back against his pillow and gazing at his father expectantly.
"What happened to this realm before we came here," he said slowly, trying to choose his words carefully. "How it fell into darkness before our great leader opened the portal that brought us here."
Travis's little mouth fell open, and his eyes grew wide with curiosity. "Darkness?"
"Yes," his father replied, giving him a small, tired smile. "When the Great Battle happened, everyone believed that the evil had been thwarted, for the most part.. But Faisal found an accomplice, and.. He found a way to destroy the great civilization that once reigned over this realm."
"Because his heart's compass was pointing them the wrong way?" Travis asked, putting one of his hands over his heart.
"Yes," his father nodded. "They chose the path of darkness."
Travis's mouth slowly fell shut. He laid in the bed, turning his attention to the ceiling. After a moment of thinking, he said, "It's sad that they didn't try to fix themselves."
"Sometimes, people don't want to be fixed."
"Even if they become bad, evil people?"
"Even if they become bad, evil people."
Travis sat up, a small frown on his face. "How did he find someone as evil as him to help him hurt all of those people?"
"I'm not too sure," his father said, looking to the book and skim reading through the first few passages. "I don't think they explained that.. But it does say that her name was Quinn."
"Quinn," Travis echoed aloud. "Was she ugly?"
"Oh, no," his father said. "She was rather pretty.. See?" He lifted the book and flipped it around, showing Travis the book. A portrait of a young woman was there. She had gorgeous blonde hair, and her skin was fair. She was indeed beautiful. But her eyes, while blue and pretty as the morning sky, harbored something dark and twisted.
Travis stared at this portrait. His little face scrunched up funny. "..She reminds me of mom," he said quietly, pulling his blanket up to his face once more. "But she looks mean!" -
"I dunno if you should glorify Quinn," a voice cut in. "She was ugly inside and out."
Travis jolted, throwing the blanket over his head. His father quickly set the book aside and stood, looking in the direction of the voice.
A young man stepped out from the shadows of the doorway. He looked much younger than Travis's father, though something about him made him feel far older. He raised a hand, giving them a nervous smile.
"Sorry," he said, sniffling a bit and dropping the hand. "I didn't mean to speak aloud."
Travis's father gasped. He shook Travis by his feet, clear panic in his eyes. "It's the Great One," he said, tugging at the blankets. "Show respect, son!"
Travis wailed, trying to cling to the covers. "It's a monster!" He screamed. "Make it go away!"
The man pursed his lips, scratching the back of his neck. "It's been a hot minute since someone called me that," he said, more to himself than anything. He walked over to Travis's father, putting his other hand on the older man's shoulder. "That's really unnecessary. I don't.. I don't need respect. I'm just another guy, y'know?"
His father slowly released the blankets, gazing at the man with a childish fascination.
"..Just another guy," the man repeated. "You can call me Lucas."
"Lucas," the older man echoed, looking at the hand that was on his shoulder. "We have been blessed by Lucas.."
Lucas sighed, rubbing his forehead. "I haven't even done anything," he said tiredly, dropping his hand and taking a few steps back. "I just didn't want to hear anyone glorifying the woman that slaughtered thousands of innocent people."
At this, Travis poked his head out of the blankets, his eyes wide with fear. "She killed lots of people?" he asked, his voice quivering.
Lucas realized his mistake as soon as he heard the fear in Travis's voice. "Well, uh," he stammered. "Yes? But she's go--"
The boy began to wail with fear. "Is Quinn going to come back for us!?"
Travis's father quickly turned his attention to his son, moving to try and rub his back. "No, Travis, no.. Quinn will never harm you.."
Lucas watched the exchange, instantly feeling guilty. He shouldn't have opened his mouth. He turned, quickly stepping back into the shadows.
The world around him melted away. Travis and his father disappeared, and the little bedroom faded to black as the shadows enveloped Lucas. He closed his eyes, crossing his arms. "f---," he muttered, rocking back and forth for a bit. "I can't keep doing this.."
There was suddenly a cool breeze blowing against his arms and through his hair. He opened his eyes. He was standing in a meadow. The flowers at his feet were emitting a soft glow. He glanced down at them, wiggling his feet.
"Such a coward," he muttered, kneeling to stroke the petals of the flower. "I should have apologized. Poor kid'll probably be scarred for a week or more.." -
ugh i shouldn't have gotten impatient and skipped what i planned, that got choppy ngdfbg

This is the first chapter of the book I'm writing!
I am waiting for mom and dad, and uncle Travis, and, well everybody above twelve goes to battles. I morph into a griffin, they tend to be patient, so they would be the best right now.
Two dragons suddenly smash through the door, wrestling each other. “Sandra! Peter!” I yell, “Stop fooling around or the whole house will fall down!” They stop fighting and throw each other dirty glances.
“Sheila is no fun,” mumbles Peter, his dragon breath smokey. Griffins are the enemies of dragons, so sometimes I can’t STAND when they’re annoying.
“Were you two in the city?” I ask them after calming down,”If people saw two young dragons battling each other on the streets then you’d be dead!”
“Why would we go into the city?” Sandra replies,”We know the rules,” Peter says. “But we found out the city is actually called Seattle,” they both said at once. I immediately wonder how they could travel fifty miles in ten minutes, but then remember what family line we have.
------------------------<>-------------------------
It has been hours since Sandra and Peter came tumbling in. Something was wrong. I could sense it. “Peter! Sandra!” I say trying to hide the panic in my strong griffin voice,”We are going to check on Mom and Dad, and Uncle Travis and Aunt Sue.
“We’re going to battle!” the young dragons said excitedly.
“Follow me!” I yell in the roaring wind. I swoop up into the sky and see Sandra and Peter slowly follow me. I forgot griffins fly faster than dragons and shout at them,”Morph into griffins so we can fly at the same speed!”
“Aww!” they say at the same time while morphing into griffins. We soar through the sky, and I turn towards the battlefield. It is empty, completely empty. Nobody is there. “Where did everyone go Sheila?” Peter and Sandra ask when they land beside me.
For some time I stand in silence.“I know what happened, but I never thought it would happen. It was a myth, it COULDN’T have happened! Dad said they were just chasing away intruders, but I now know THEY WERE LYING! IT WAS TOO DANGEROUS BUT THEY STILL DID IT, AND NOW ALL THE ADDERMANS ARE DEAD!” I scream so loud it echos.
“Sheila,” Peter muttered,”You’re scaring me.” I soon realize griffins are not the answer when you want to be calm in a bad situation. What’s a calm animal? Think, my thoughts can only think of lazy animals, but then it hits me.
“Its okay,” I say.
“Cool you’re a phoenix!” Sandra yells, somehow still unaware that we are the only Addermans alive.
“Look, Sandra, Peter, I’m sorry, but your parents, and grandparents, as well as mine are, um,” I don’t know how to say it even though I just said it more aggressively, “They probably died fighting for us,” I finally said.
Now that I am a phoenix, all of my feelings aren’t blocked by my thoughts. Mom and Dad are gone, and they aren’t coming back. Sadness overwhelms me like a blazing wildfire. But my mind wonders, how have the evil ones risen from the dead? -
This is the second chapter!
I always knew there was a prophecy that a hundred years after the great war the evil ones would come again and kill all of us, but nobody thought it would happen. That once they came they would be more powerful than ever.
I’ll never forget the words that flashed in all the Adderman’s minds the moment it ended, I wasn’t there but I was told what it was.
I need to think about what to do now, maybe I can look in the library, no. I know! All I need now is an old friend, but can I trust her? She is older and smarter than me, she could trick me, but I would need to trick her first.
----------------------------<*>--------------------------------
“For the last time!” Peter screams,”WHY ARE WE THESE WEIRD SNAKE WHALES!” We are swimming through a secret water passageway.
“We are leviathans!” I remind him,”I know our parents literally just died but we have to do something!” Sandra and Peter don’t know who I’m looking for, so they are pretty confused.”Look, there is a girl I know, you don’t know her, but she can help us find out what happened to mom and dad, and everyone,” I tell them.
“So we go to seek help from a creep who lives underwater,” Sandra replies, still looking puzzled.
“Her name is Teresa,” I tell them,”And she doesn’t live underwater, speaking of that, we’re near the end of the tunnel so follow me.” The tunnel gets smaller and smaller, and being a trio of leviathans, that is a bad thing.
“Um, this is really tight,” Peter complains.
“The tunnel is actually really big, but leviathans are HUGE, we should morph into something smaller,” I explain to him. I decide on an orca, they are very pretty and is my favorite sea animal.
I look to my side and see a huge shark, definitely Peter, and a sea turtle. “An orca?” Peter holds in a laugh,”I chose a shark and you chose an orca?!” I don’t get how its funny that in nature we would be killing each other.
The tunnel ended abruptly and we had to stop.” I suggest that we morph into a LAND ANIMAL Peter,” he is still a shark and is refusing to get out of the water.
“Oh FINE! Ruin all my fun,” he replies. I morph into a phoenix, and I see Sandra morph into a panther. Peter grumpily morphs into a wolf and we are off.
A thought suddenly enters my mind, how will Teresa recognize us if we are animals? “Look” I say, “I’m sorry, but Teresa won’t recognize us if we’re animals.” Peter is now steaming with anger but morphs into his nine year old self. He has brown hair, blue eyes, glasses, and is wearing his usual blue t-shirt and shorts.
“Happy?!” he grumbles. Sandra is now herself too, brown hair blue eyes, and wearing a hoodie and leggings. I say goodbye to phoenix me and morph into myself, unlike Peter and Sandra, I have green eyes, but the brown hair is a thing all Addermans have. I am wearing a regular patterned shirt with jeans.
Now that we are all morphed into ourselves, I take a look around. We are in Teresa’s underground palace. I walk up to a sign and read it:
Welcome to Queen Teresa’s underground palace
Visitors, follow the tapestries with a red outline.
Intruders, well you should be dead by now.
Have a good time! -
Chapter three so far!
“The sign says that we should follow the tapestries with red outlines,” I tell Peter and Sandra. I walk toward a giant one with a yellow outline, there is a black panther on a stack of rocks and humans below who seem to be bowing to it.
“Are you sure we should be us?” Sandra asks, “I don’t think she likes humans.” I think again about Teresa and remember that she does hate humans.
“Sorry, I forgot Teresa has declared war on all humans,” I tell them.
“WHAT!” Peter yells while quickly morphing into a lion. Sandra looks shocked as she morphs into a tiger and I decide to do the same by morphing into a sleek jaguar.
“You are so bad at times Sheila!” Peter roars in his now deep demanding lion voice.
“Wow!” Sandra shouts in her also more strong voice,”You sound awesome Peter, and so do I!”
I bet I have a big strong voice and say,“I sound cool too!” Peter and Sandra stare at me like I just grew a beard, then I realize I sound like one of those teenage girls in movies that are always on their phone.
I would blush if I weren’t a jaguar because Peter and Sandra both are laughing like maniacs, and in their strong voice they sound like they’re dying.
I decide to morph into a black panther instead and test the voice,”Stop laughing or I’ll claw your hearts out!” Sounds fierce, I’ll stick with this.
We are walking by the tapestries and everything seems to involve humans being weak. We finally arrive to a gigantic door and two lions, both male, guarding the door.
“I can handle this,” Peter seems to think he says that like a charming prince, but I ignore him and let him go talk to the guards.”Hello my fellow gents,” he says so weird I make a silent growl to signal it.
“What are you doing here?” the first guard asked.
Peter replied by telling them,”Me and my pathetic-” I growl,”My amazing friends need to see queen Teresa.” The guards look unconvinced.
“Show us your friends,” the second guard snarls,”We can’t let any nasty humans even near Teresa.” Me and Sandra step out of the darkness and the guards look surprised. They at once open the doors.
‘’Oh my goodness!” A voice suddenly shouts,”I told you pesky sales cougars to go!” a black panther suddenly jumps out of nowhere and almost slashes my throat.
“Chill out!” I yell while trying to dodge attacks,”I’m not a sales cougar!” She suddenly stops and realizes what I said.
She looks at us all and suddenly says,”You are those Adderman children aren’t you?” I am scared, mom said Teresa would kill any human she ever and I-”Its okay Sheila, you’re family isn’t exactly human, so that's why we were friends, remember?”
I stop freaking out and remember why I’m here, though before I can say anything, a cougar steps into the room.
“We have sales on all-” faster than the wind Teresa leaped on the cougar cut his throat and yanked him out with her teeth.
“As you were saying.” she asked. I feel slightly creeped out but tell her -
