Lachlan had done many crimes in his life, but this one really takes the cake. He woke up in a dimly lit room with nothing but a bed, lamp and a steel door. The bed was extremely dodgy, with the springs exposed, there weren't any covers let alone a pillow. The lamp barely gave any light but it was visible enough to see the steel door. A camera in the top left corner was faintly beeping indicating that it was recording his every move.
"Where am I?", he yelled at the camera, hoping to get an actual response. But to no avail.
He sat on the edge of the springy bed, and covered his face with both of his hands. " What did I do wrong to be sent here?", he wondered to himself. When all hope was lost, he heard a distorted noise in the back of his head, thinking he had lost his mind, but he didn't. He took away his hands from his face and was confused of what saw on the concrete floor. In small, white bold letters appeared underneath his feet saying, "PICK LOCK". -
"Pick lock?", he said nervously. Lachlan started stomping the words like a mad man, but they would not go away. Just then, he remembered that he put a lock pick in his left pocket in case he accidentally locked himself outside of his own home. "This better work." Lachlan said softly. After at least an hour of picking, the lock finally fell off the doors handle. The steel door slowly creaked as Lachlan pushed it opened to come across a long corridor with doors numbered, 101, 102, 103, and so on. This was not a prison.
As Lachlan slowly closed the door to make the guards or anyone who was there think that he was still in there, he heard the distorted noise again. This time, it appeared on a wall behind him saying, again, in big bold letters, "BREAK OUT." -
Just as he was about to question himself, two voices echoed down the corridor. Lachlan quickly ducked into a storage room, peeking out the door overhearing the conversation.
"Hey, who was that person the General brought in earlier?", said one of the men. "Beats me," The other replied. "But he does look familiar. Did you ever try reading his file, find out who he is?". The man then pulled out a small key of some sort. "Let's find out."
The two then continued down the corridor talking, indicating the coast was clear. "I've go to get out of here, and fast!" Lachlan looked around the room, hoping that there was an air vent or something he could crawl through that would be able to lead him outside. And there was.
High above crates was an air vent, with four screws surrounding each corner. Lachlan's climbing skills came in handy here. Crate after crate, he made noises each climb and had finally caught his breath when he was at the top.
He then put his hand in his pocket to grab the lock pick, but there was a problem. It was gone. -
"Damn it..." He whispered under his breath. "And that could have been my only way out..." Giving up, waiting for someone to capture him, he laid down on the crate. Then, he heard it again. The distorted noise!
"CLIMB." It said. "You're kidding me, right?" Lachlan huffed heavily. Right next to the big, bold letters was a pipe. It led up to a window!
"Finally!" He said. "Freedom!" Just as he put his hands around the pipe to start climbing it, the storage door swung open. A guard had walked in. "Yeah, the area's all clear. I'm going to do a further sweep. No, no, I said I'm-- HEY YOU!" Lachlan's eyes locked on to the guard's. He then started climbing it like there was no tomorrow, but he didn't care he got detected, he was getting out of there!
Two more guards rushed in to aid their comrade. "He's getting away!" Shouted one of the frantic guards. "Kill him!" A guard then pulled out a stun gun that fires shocking rounds, similar to a taser. He pulled the trigger, but it was too late. Lachlan was already out the window and gone. "Damn it! I want every guard in and outside if this building alerted so we can capture this b------! Get moving!" -
Lachlan climbed over a railing and landed on a balcony. Sure, he was outside, but freedom was still out of reach. He sat down and took a few deep breathes. His hands were shaking, heart pumping and sweat slowly dripping down his face.
"What have I done?" He whispered to himself, overlooking the balcony. "I should have just surrendered when I had the chance. What if I get caught and tortured, or, even worse?" His voice was trembling with fear, not knowing what to do.
Then, a man's voice came over a loudspeaker all across the base. "Attention: We have an intruder inside the base. He is wearing a leather jacket, he has slick hair and his eyes are brown. If you see him, capture him and bring him to me. I want to teach him what happens when you mess with the wrong people!" The speaker clicked off, like someone turning off a radio.
Lachlan knew what he was in for. The distorted noise again was heard. This time, it was projected on the side of a building, way off in the distance. "REMAIN UNDETECTED" It said. Lachlan sniffed and said, "Don't you understand? It's over. They know what I look like. I have nowhere to go." He looked around, and he was right. THERE was nowhere to go. -
Just as he closed his eyes, he felt a cold metal weapon press against the back of his head. "Don't move, or I pull the trigger." A voice said from behind. Lachlan slowly rotated his head, but was yelled at. "I SAID, DON'T MOVE!"
Guards from below heard the shouting and looked up to see Lachlan completely surrounded by the swarming guards. The man then spoke into his radio. "Sir?" A gruff voice replied with, "Yes? What is it?
"The intruder. We have him." -
"Very good. Knock him unconscious, then bring him to me." The radio transmission switched off. The guard then hit Lachlan in the back of his head, knocking him out instantly.
What felt like minutes turned into hours. Lachlan slowly opened his eyes, dazed and confused. He was in a room with two guards, one standing beside a door with a retinal scanner, and the other sitting opposite of him in front of a table.
"Well, well. Look who decided to wake up!" It was the same guard that knocked him out, Lachlan could tell by his voice. "The General has a bone to pick with you. But he's not here right now, so in the meantime, you can tell us everything you know." He then stood up and walked around to stand next to Lachlan, in what seemed like a torture chair. -
The guard looked closely at Lachlan and said, "I'm going to ask you a few questions, and if you resist to answer one of them, then we'll make you answer." In pain and tired, he slowly nodded. "Right," He said. "First question: Who sent you here?"
Lachlan looked up in disbelief, and looked back down, not answering the guard's question. The guard then pulled out a pocket knife, slowly putting it up to Lachlan's neck. "Once more for the hearing impaired. Who sent you?" This time, he answered. "I... I don't know... Please, don't hurt me. I'll do anything..."
Lachlan was fearing for his life at this point. "Fine then. How did you get out of your cell?" The guard asked. Lachlan looked up and whispered, "The lock pick, in my left pocket. But I lost it when I nearly escaped." A faint distorted noise played in the back of his mind. "Now what?" He said weakly. Words appeared on the table, telling him to "FIGHT BACK."
He started to cry softly, with a tear running down his cheek. The guard had saw him and he pulled head up to see his face. "Wow, nothing like some basic interrogation skills to break this one." Then, Lachlan felt a sharp sting in his back. He started clenching his hands into fists. He gritted his teeth, ready to fight. "Don't worry," The guard said to him, unaware of what was about to happen.
He noticed Lachlan's skin starting to get pale and pale. "Hey, are you alright?" The man at the door said, walking closer to him. Then, the torture chair's chains broke off as Lachlan let out a eardrum bursting scream. -
The interrogator fell backwards as the other guard blocked his ears. Lachlan then flipped the table, crushing both of them. "Get him, damn it! He can't escape again!" Shouted the man. But Lachlan was.
-
While both of the guards were on the ground trying to lift the table up off of them, Lachlan took the time to look at himself in the dirty mirrors that surrounded the room. Looking down at his hands, he noticed that they were... Different. They were all, full of veins.
"Have I been drugged?" He said to one of the guards still underneath the table. "Yes," Replied one of them. "But that doesn't mean you'll be getting away!" Lachlan quickly ran to the door and kicked it down, making a loud crashing noise when it hit the concrete. "Son of a b----! It's the intruder!" A man shouted from the catwalks on top, aiming his rifle at Lachlan, who was now sprinting as fast as he could.
The siren went off, putting the entire base on lockdown. Another man's voice echoed through the loudspeakers. "We have an intruder. Send reinforcements now!" As Lachlan ran down the long and narrow corridor, dodging anything he came across, two heavily armed soldiers came around from each corner, with shields, bulletproof vests and large helmets. They weren't playing around anymore.
