And how he smiles back
Like you share some kind of secret.
For years, I watched you struggle for his attention.
You were so strong,
So durable,
And yet you simply lowered your head
As girl after girl took his arm,
Your hand dangling by his
From the other side,
Occasionally brushing his warm skin.
I wanted to make you feel that way.
I wanted to share those smiles,
Those warm glances,
I wanted you to love me
And to watch me
As you did him.
I watched you two,
The way you collapsed against the lockers,
The way he breathlessly kissed you,
And how you kissed him back.
You seemed to melt at each other's touch
And I knew
I could never make you feel that way. -
Like the waving tree,
Which bends in the summer wind,
Your words shook my chest.
