Part One
He hadn't wanted to move away from his home town, away from everything he knew and everyone he loved, but it had never been up to him. Instead, the court decided that his older two siblings would stay with his father, and he, as the youngest, would go where ever his mother wanted him to go. He was five, then. Sammy was seven, and Terra was almost ten. Felix, the runt of the family, knew that he was the baby, and that was why his mom fought so hard for him. He knew she wanted the other two as well, but she settled for seeing them every summer, while Felix went to stay with his father for those short two months. He lived for summer, because during the school year, he stayed at home all the time. Home schooled, because he was 'too fragile' and 'too small' to go to school with kids who were probably twice his size, and mean. "Mean like Sammy?," Felix would ask. His mom would nod, and tell him to go back to writing his name.
It was like that until he turned ten, and would have started middle school. There was an accident, and his daddy and his brother and sister came down the next day. Terra cried. Sammy didn't cry, but he was sad, and Daddy was sad, too. So, Felix was sad, but he didn't really know why. Terra tried to explain, to tell him that his mommy had gotten in a car wreck and was dead, but Felix didn't want to believe it. He still didn't want to believe it when he was sent back to the coast with Daddy, Terra and Sammy. He still refused to say that it was true when he and his brother were dropped off at the middle school that they were all going to attend. Felix and Sammy were both in the sixth grade, Sammy having failed twice. Terra called it "being held back" but Felix knew that it was because Sammy didn't care about his grades. Either way, Felix was glad that his big brother was there to keep an eye on him. Terra was in the 10th grade, and wasn't there to look out for him. Felix quickly realized that he would have preferred his sister when some seventh grader slammed the locker on his fingers, and Sammy looked the other way as his little brother cried. The older left him in the hall to go to his home room, and Felix, never being in this situation before, locked himself in a bathroom stall to cry. He probably would have stayed there the whole day if a pair of converse with sparkling rainbow laces hadn't taken the stall next to him, along with a pair of zip-up black books. The kid with rainbow laces and the one with boots seemed to be kissing, but Felix wasn't sure. Either way, he had had his knees to his chest, so the two clearly didn't know he was in there. He tried to keep it that way, but as the two got more passionate, a sniffle slipped out, and the commotion stopped completely. In a hurry, the black boots left, and the boy with rainbow laces was still, waiting a bit before asking, "Is someone in here?"
Felix wasn't going to answer. He hadn't planed to, but he sniffled again. "Are you okay?," Rainbow laces asked, leaving his stall to knock on the door of the one Felix was in. The young boy gave up, and slipped off the toilet, opening the stall door. He swallowed hard, staring up at the boy who stood over him. He was a couple inches taller, with a fluff of blonde hair, and green eyes. He was slender, but not really muscular, with a plain blue tee shirt, and a plain grey scarf that hung in three hoops around his neck. Felix had never, ever before given any thought towards boys, but his first thought about this one was how unbelievably cute he was. The sixth grader felt heat rise to his cheeks as the taller boy stared at him, cocking his head to the side and furrowing his brow. "Are you okay? It sounded like you were crying-- Oh, what happened to your hand? Come on, I'll take you to the nurse. I'm Leonardo, by the way. But please, call me Leo." As he took Felix's hand and lead him out of the bathroom and down the hall, he seemed not to notice the young boy's fluster. "You're new, huh? I'm pretty good with keeping up with everyone's names.. What's your's?" The boy hesitated, staring up at Leo with big, round blue eyes that were still red from crying. "Your name?" Leo repeated, glancing down at him. "F-Felix M-Mitchel Baker," He stammered as the older pulled him through a door into a white office, leading him towards a plastic chair. "Felix. Hm, wait here. I'll go see where the nurse is," He assured him, patting his head before dropping his hand. A few minutes later, he returned with a plump woman, who looked at Felix's hand. Every now and then, while the lady was wrapping his fingers, the boy would glance back, only to see that Leo was still leaning against the wall, waiting patiently until he was all fixed up. When the nurse handed them both slips to get back into class, he took Felix's good hand, and lead him out.
"..So. Felix Baker, huh?" Leo asked, rolling the name around on his tongue. He raised an eyebrow. "Are you related to Sammy Baker, by chance?" Felix nodded, and Leo clicked his tongue, stopping at the hall of seventh grade lockers to open his, and get a couple books out. "Sammy's.. Sammy's interesting," He finally said, closing the door. "He's mean," Felix agreed, to which Leo laughed, ruffling his hair again. Felix was starting to feel patronized. This kid couldn't have been more than two years older than him, and yet he was treating him like a child. He kept his mouth shut, though. Leo was the first person to have shown him kindness. They talked a bit more as Leo lead Felix to the gym, which was the class he had first period. Before the older could leave, Felix stuttered an apology. "I-I.. I didn't mean to interrupt you and your girlfriend earlier," He stammered, looking at his own shoes as a flush of pink lit up his cheeks again. The seventh grader laughed, shaking his head. "That wasn't a girl, Felix. It was a boy.. And he wasn't my boyfriend, either. I wouldn't date someone who cant match their clothes," He joked, and gave Felix's back a pat before hurrying off to his own class. -
Part Two
He didn't see Leo again until almost a month later, at a pep rally before Thanksgiving break. Felix didn't have to sit with his class, but he probably would have preferred that, as he still hadn't had very much luck making friends. He had planned to go to the third floor bathroom(It was cleaner than the other ones) and hide out, not really liking the idea of sitting with a large crowd, but there were some grade eight boys in there, and the air smelled kinda funny, so he quickly left. Instead of going to the gym, though, he got side tracked. The stairwell door that lead to the roof was propped open. Upon farther inspection, Felix found that the thing propping it open was a shoe.. A shoe with sparkly rainbow laces. He inhaled, glancing up the dark stair well, slowly slipping inside. When he did so, his own foot caught on Leo's shoe, which dislodged it. Before Felix could do much of anything, the door swung shut, locked from the outside. The young boy chewed on his lip, looking up, spotting a thin stream of light. When he walked up the steps, he found that the other door was held open by a matching shoe. He hesitated, but went on, slipping out into the air. He's never been on the roof before. It was strange, and flat and gravely almost the the sidewalk pavement. There was a deflated basket ball, and a yellowed, torn pair of underwear hanging off a pipe. However, none of these were near as captivating as Leo, who was laying with his butt and thighs aligned vertically with the ledge. His calves and feet were hanging off into the air, with his perfectly matched socks(They were decorated with cartoon penguins in multi-colored tuxedos). His back was against the flat of the roof, and he had an arm across his chest, the other propped so that his hand covered his face. His blonde hair was spilled in a halo around his head, and Felix couldn't help but notice how the light caught on the strands. The younger boy started to back up, wanting to leave him alone, but Leo shifted, rolling to sit up and stare at him. "..You let the door close at the bottom, didn't you?" Felix was half way back when he heard the question and froze up, nodding. He turned to look at the older, chewing on his lip. The blonde sighed and shook his head, standing up. He placed his hands on his hips. In his crisp school-standard polo, and professionally ironed khaki pants, he would have looked extremely official, spare his colorful socks. "Well," He started, tilting his head to the side and cocking a smile, "I guess you'll just have to jump off the roof to run and get help, then," He explained, tsking softly. When Felix's eyes widened, and he started stuttering, fearing the three story drop, the boy started laughing, dropping the menacing composer. "I'm kidding, okay? Don't worry. I have a key. C'mere. Sit down." He patted the ground next to him, and Felix let out a breath, sitting next to him without too much hesitation. He sat criss-cross apple sauce, and Leo took it as an invitation to lay flat on his back, with his head in the younger boy's lap. Upon this happening, Felix had no idea where to put his hands, so he just kind of held them there awkwardly hovering above Leo. The blonde huffed, and grabbed the younger's hands, placing them in his hair. Noticing Felix's apparent confusion, Leo sighed. "Rub my head, silly."
"O-Okay," He stammered, doing as he was told. This time, Leo's sigh was one of contentment. After a couple minutes, he asked, "So, how old are you? And what're you into?" The sixth grader hesitated, before saying, "Ten. And, uh.. A read. And I like sweeping. I know that's weird, but I-" He paused, as Leo was giggling. The giggles built into a full-on laugh that brought color to the young boy's cheeks. He was sure to get made fun of now. Leo shook his head.
"I'm eleven.. Started school a year early. And I'm guessing you did too? Either way, I'm a grade above you.. And, Felix, I didn't mean what you were into as in what you liked to do.. I meant, do you like boys or girls, or somethin' else?"
"I don't.. I dunno," He shrugged, looking away. Felix was red now. Leo sat up, narrowing his eyes at him. "Well, I bet you knew, but I like boys. You know what else I like?"
"What?"
"Kissing boys. But only when they're cute and they dress all nice.. Like you. See, vests are kinda lame now, but you look adorable in it. A blue knit vest and a white polo. Interesting.Where do you shop? There's not much variety in this school with the dress code and all, but you're doing a pretty nice job."
"...I dunno," Felix responded, feeling a bit flustered now. Leo sighed and shook his head, leaning closer. The blond tapped Felix's nose with his finger, and gave him a quick, short kiss on his lips. "Tomorrow's the first day of the break, right?" He asked after pulling away, ignoring the stunned look on the boy's face. He stared out at the bus ramp, where they were lining up. "Right?" He repeated. Felix seemed to snap out of whatever trance he was in, and nodded, earning a hum in response. "Well.. Come on. I'll walk you home. That way I'll know where you live so that I can come get you tomorrow. So that we can go shopping, you know. Let's go," He said, standing up, holding out a hand. Felix hesitated, and then took it, swallowing hard. He was supposed to walk home with Sammy, but would it really do that much harm? As Leo lead him down the stairs, he realized that he didn't care.
