OPENING
The street itself would have stopped all accusations of America was the promise land. Broken beer-bottle shards lined the pavement, almost pretty, sparkling in the moonlight. The windows on houses and stores alike were barred, though they were too high to be reached. Gates were locked. Blinds drawn, the houses looking as dark as the tombs of ancient kings.
The sidewalk was barren of all forms of life, apart from a man who came from the East side of town, muttering profanities of worthless mechanics and even less valuable cars. The man wore a pinstripe suit, and carried a briefcase, and had his hair combed back. A tag around his neck read off as M. C. Everyman, but there was no other trace personals on him- No wrist watch, no rings. He was a very barren and plain man.
It was a much more interesting character that grabbed his ankle. A withered hand shot out of a cul-de-sac alley that seemed to lead into darkness, away from the comfort of street lights.
