Prologue
"Hurry! Big brother will wake up soon, and when he wakes up, he'll get Allaire and Father involved.. They'll kill us both. You can't spend so much time packing too many unnecessary items, Angel.."
I looked up as soon as my sister said my name. I wanted to whine, but I said nothing as I stopped packing up what few pillows and toys I had. I should have grown out of them, seeing as I was already fourteen, but it was too hard to just let them go. My friends were the only people that gave me things to treasure. They were the only things that made me feel human. I nodded at her words, starting to put clothing over the toys that were filling half of my back.
Sasha and I had decided that my bag would be the one full of our beloved items and clothing while hers would have all of our money and some food inside. We had to improvise, of course, because the two of us only had about two hundred dollars put together and there wasn't enough food for us to take without feeling guilty of making Dion and Allaire starve. Father was a naturally angry person, and he would probably beat our brothers if he found out that they had let us take off with all of their food. Although, we wouldn't mind if they were the ones getting hurt instead of us.
Ever since I was born, Dion, Allaire, and Father took the liberty of making me feel like I wasn't important. They said I was bad, that I was trash because I accidentally killed our mother when I was born. I felt like I was a curse. A weakling. Sasha was the only one who made me happy. Whenever she got money, she would share it with me. She fed me behind everyone's backs and took my punishments for me. I've always looked up to her. She's only two years older than me, but I feel like we could be twins. She has powers just like me. I've heard Dion mutter that we're special. (But in a bad way.)
Today, we were ready to leave. To escape this place and go be free. We weren't sure if they would hunt us down, but we wanted to try. I wanted to repay Sasha, and she wanted freedom. So we're going to get out of here.. At least, I pray that she will.
When I just just barely finished packing and we had unlocked the window, we heard footsteps coming out of the hall. Dion, our eighteen year old brother, slammed the door open, his eyes wide in anger. He had obviously heard our whispers. I let out a squeak, scrambling up off the floor. He had a gun in his left hand.
"Angel. Sit the f--- down and stay down. Sasha, you too. Drop the bags, close the window, and come here. Be good siblings, okay? I don't want to hurt you." He held up the gun, pointing it at us. Sasha grabbed my hand, taking a step towards the window. He hissed, pointing it at me. "STOP."
I grabbed Sasha's hand, squeezing my eyes shut. It took a second for my powers to kick in. Soon, Sasha and I were completely invisible, out of our brother's sight. She pulled me out of the window just as he started shooting recklessly at the walls. I saw Allaire come running in, followed by our father. I could hear their yelling and cries as we ran off into the night, invisible and safe from them.
