She watched the couples at the ball, green eyes tired. She sat alone, her eyes on the glass she held in her hand. She tried not to cry.
Every year it was the same thing. She'd throw a ball for her friends, and they'd come running to her. Once a year, she could pretend she was okay. But inside, she was breaking down.
She glanced up and scanned the faces warily. Ah, there was Ever. She and the girl had been close friends when they were young, until Ever had married the man the girl loved.
That very man danced with her tonight, holding the other in his arms.
She sighed, and went back to watching the ice in her cup. It was a much safer endeavor. The girl wanted the night to end.
It was kind of funny. She'd been so excited, rushing to prepare everything, singing while she'd brushed her long gold curls and slipped on a stunning white dress, her favorite color. But now that it had started, she wanted it to end. She wanted them out of her castle.
She risked another glance up, and wish she hadn't. There stood Gabriel, her shining angel. The man had promised her they'd marry when they were children, but as soon as Heph because queen he gave up. He was a spineless coward, afraid to break tradition. She hated him for it.
She quickly turned, but the next view was no better. Kael, her brother, her keeper, stood there. He didn't glance at her, but his presence was enough to break her. The man had defended her from death itself when she was a child. He still had scars from that battle. But years afterwards he'd forgotten her. He'd never hold her close and promise to keep the demons away anymore. He had moved on in life, become a judge. He was corrupted, though, and the girl wished he'd just come home to her side.
Tears began streaming down the girl's face. She'd had enough. Her sanity had been stretched to it's limit. She stood, and set the glass down on the table carefully, and began walking to her room, to hide and cry there until they all drank their fill and left.
She stumbled though, and fell into the table, knocking the glasses and dishes off onto the floor as she grabbed the tablecloth in hopes of steadying herself.
All eyes in the room turned toward her. And at that moment, she laughed. She laughed through her tears, as the glass from the shattered glasses dug into her arm. She laughed at the pathetic people, who drank her wine, who stayed in her castle, who claimed to love and cherish their queen.
She laughed. And then she lost it.
So? What did you think, little Anna?:P -
