Dear Journal,
I never thought I'd ever use this book. My mother gave it to me for Christmas a few years ago, but I hadn't ever considered writing in it. My life isn't too exciting. I'm a school janitor. I work at an elementary school, Damien, they call it. Damien Elementary School. The most exciting thing that ever happens is when my closet gets toliet-papered, or when a kid throws up in the cafeteria. Needless to say, I'm kind of boring. I have no wife or girlfriend, and no social life (unless you count the kids that say hi then run away). I'm not handsome. I'm not rich. But I get by. I like it that way.
But something happened today. After all the kids had left, I was collecting my things and leaving as well. But...I heard a noise...a crash like breaking glass from one of the nearby classrooms. When I went to check it out, there was some awful creature with rotting flesh that hung in bloody chunks was climbing in through the classroom window. The smell was horrid. I recognized it from when I had to recover bird corpses.
I had grabbed a textbook and hit it in the head, hard, two times.
There were more filling the hall. I couldn't stay there. I fought my way out and I'm now in the tool shed outside the school. I can't be here forever, though. I have to leave or else I'll starve or something worse. But where do I go? What do I do?

It wasn't too long ago that a young, dark haired boy with sparkling violet eyes was forced to make a decision that would change the world as he knew it. At the time, everything seemed perfect. He lived a wealthy lifestyle with his sister, Raylen, and their two loving parents. Raylen had blue hair and eyes, and she loved her brother to no limit. The parents would do anything for their children, even if it meant keeping some secrets. You see, they were a wealthy family, and many people wanted the money. The parents were one day foolish enough to leave the eleven year old boy and his eight year old sister alone that day.
---
The boy moved his bishop only a square away from the black king. "Check mate." Although his tone was bored, a satisfied smirk danced on his lips as the boy crossed his arms and leaned back.
"What?! Not again!" Raylen frowned. "How come you always win, Victor?" She looked at the board, upset to find she was once again trapped.
Victor cracked his knuckles and laughed. "Hey, don't be sad. I'm older than you. It's only natural."
This did not seem to cheer up the girl. Victor frowned and left his seat to approach his younger sibling, gently patting her head. "Hey come on, now. Don't be so daft. One of these days, I'm sure you'll win all the games." He grinned, and Raylen cracked a smile.
"Thanks!" Raylen giggled and hugged her brother. "I look forward to winning all the kings!"
Victor smiled and hugged her back before pulling away. "Now, what should we play next?"
Suddenly, there was a loud thud at the door. The two siblings gasped in fear. Then, another. Raylen clung to Victor's arm, letting out a whimper. Yet another thud sounded. Thud. Thud. CRASH!!! The door fell to the ground in pieces as a group of large men entered the house, rushing over to cabinets and drawers, pulling them open and breaking what did not matter.
"Search the house," one of the men, who seemed to be the leader, yelled at the others in a gruff and harsh voice. "I will handle the children." He spat out the word 'children' as if they were filthy rats.
Victor took a deep breath and glared bravely as he pulled Raylen behind him, the blue haired girl still clinging to her big brother. "Why are you here?" he asked, trying to mask the fear in his voice for the sake of the petrified girl behind him.
The man pulled out a knife as his men ransacked the house. "Don't worry about that." He advanced towards the children, his heavy boots shaking the ground with each step.
The boy took three steps back. "P-please let us go. You w-won't hear from us, a-and w-we, we won't tell a s-s-soul about this!"
The man took four steps forward, a sick and twisted smile corrupting his face. Victor could smell the alchohol in the man's breath as he leaned forward. "I'm afraid I can't take that risk." The man grabbed Raylen and put the blade against her throat, causing both her and her brother to scream.
Victor clenched his fists and took a step forward. "NO!" All sounds were silenced other than Raylen's hysterical crying as she wondered if her life would end there. The boy's heart beat furiously against his chest as he screwed his eyes shut. "P-please, let us...let us spend our final moments w-with eachother."
The man hesitated before grabbing both children by their shirts. He threw them both into the office, as it was already reaped of all valuables. He locked them in and yelled, "You have ten minutes, then I kill you both!!" The man was not worried about the children escaping, as there were no windows.
Victor took his sister into his arms as she sobbed loudly, while his tears were silent. He wanted to seem strong to the girl.
"Raylen..." he said quietly, gently carressing her soft blue hair. "I want you to run as far and fast as you possibly can."
Raylen looked up at him, scared and confused. How was she supposed to escape if there weren't any windows?
Victor pulled away and pryed open a floorboard, grunting in effort. Finally, he discovered a large mallet that had been hidden there in case of fires. Summoning every ounce of strength he had, the boy swung the weapon at the wall. After a few swings, a hole small enough for Raylen to crawl through was created.
"HEY!" the man screamed in the distance as he heard these sounds. They could hear his heavy footsteps approaching as Victor yelled desperately at his beloved sister. "Run!" he told her, "Run, Raylen, and don't turn back!" Seeing her hesitation, Victor took her hand and softly kissed her forehead. "I'll see you soon, don't worry." The boy gave a weak smile. Raylen reached up and kissed her brother's cheek before hurrying into the hole, her dress being torn as she crawled through. But she did not care. She had to leave. Finally, Raylen pushed herself through just as the man emerged from the door, although part of her dress flew freely in the wind.
Raylen then ran, her legs burning as she desperately climbed up the hill that overlooked their house. Finally, she reached the top, taking deep breaths as she attempted to slow her heart. Raylen sat and watched the house for a couple minutes until she saw fire on the first floor. It started as a small little bud until it began to grow into a murderous red flower, causing the top floors to all collapse into the belly of the fire. Finally, Raylenrealized that Victor would never return to her. Herhands flew to her mouth. "No..." she breathed. "No! NO!! NO!!"she collapsed and threw her head into her arms and sobbed. "NO!! NO!! VICTOR!!!" Fat tears rolled down he cheeks, hot and fast.
It all seemed fuzzy to Raylen when her parents finally came home, police sirens wailing in the distance. She felt their warm embrace as they picked her up and carried her. Although they whispered words of comfort, their choked sobs indicated the sadness the family felt in those moments.

As if it was a slideshow in the back of her mind, these images flashed as Raylen stared at her brother, now an adult. How was he alive?
