  Clover peeled open her big green eyes and stretched, getting out of bed. She yawned, and web over to the mirror. She looked the same as she always had. Pale blue coat and wings, leaf-green mane pulled into a ponytail, and the four leaf clover adorning her flank. Her cutie mark. She was still fairly young, but her eyes looked sad and wise, as though she had seen too many things she didn't want to. Equestria had changed since she was a foal. It had started when the two royal sisters had an argument. Clover didn't know the details, but it had ended with Princess Celestia saying that Princess Luna's ideas of expanding the kingdom were foolish. In her anguish, Luna fled from the land, declaring that she would find a place where she was accepted and treated properly. Princess Twilight was also away, her excuse being that she needed a break from palace life, and she wanted to study the rest of the world. Things had gone downhill from there. Celestia was often occupied with her own thoughts, and had let the kingdom fall apart. Prejudices between the three races grew incredibly strong, leading to murders and captures. The earth ponies had been extinguished, with no powers to assist their survival. The unicorns were strong, but the pegasi were more determined. They had taken over the unicorns, aiming to destroy their race as well. Clover shook her head. The other pegasi were stupid. Why couldn't they see that all ponies were the same inside? She trotted into the main room of her small house and saw her best friend Sparkler asleep on the couch. Sparkler was one of the few unicorns who weren't captured or killed yet, and Clover had promised to protect her. The blue pegasus's friend shifted slightly, her wavy magenta mane falling down her back. Her orange coat had a small firework on the flank, representing her friend's bright and energetic personality. Clover smiled, and began to prepare breakfast. It was quite early, but they needed to eat by the time the pegasi patrols came by.

  She shook Sparkler awake and handed her a plate of pancakes. "I'm going out," Clover told her. "I'll be back this afternoon." Sparkler nodded blearily and started to eat. Clover walked out onto the cobblestone path, and was soon swept up in a crowd of pegasi. A few of them looked different then the rest. Their eyes were hard and cruel, and they had a bright red wing symbol on their black armour. The patrols. Clover nervously headed away from them. The young filly soon came to the marketplace, and she began to stock up a basket with food. She turned away from a small fruit stand, and her emerald eyes widened in surprise. "S-Sparkler?!" She muttered to herself. Her friend had some sort of bird feathers on her back, a weak imitation of pegasi wings. The tip of her horn was painfully visible, protruding out from her bright mane. Clover cursed under her breath and galloped toward her. "What are you doing here?!" She hissed. Sparkler's crystalline blue eyes were desperate and frustrated. "I had to get out! I can't stand being closed up all day." She whispered back fiercely. Clover was about to fire a retort when five gleaming pairs of black armor became visible in the crowd. Clover frantically tried to push her friend the other way, but the unicorn wouldn't budge. Clover thought she was being stubborn into she saw that her friend's eyes were frozen wide in fear. A gruff voice shouted out over the buzz of the crowd. "Hey! Over there!"
