Thread Topic: You know what would be neat.
-
I can see users growing more dependent on PM than external sources (especially new users), and this being a problem due to how the site crashes somewhat frequently.
-
"Because this particular forum is full of people who would conspire against one another in any way possible. All for the dramatics, I can see people taking advantage of this to plan mass harassment schemes, hacking, spamming and/or trolling.. If not that, then no one would socialize and the forums would be completely obsolete."
I once suggested this exact thing but am now fully against it due to this reason and this reason specifically. That, and I do agree with that Selena said. A third reason why I can't support this is because I don't ever see this being done. GTQ Guy almost never comes on and he wouldn't do something this big so suddenly. All he does anymore, when he does something here, is make quiz updates. -
1. It's a matter of population. GTQ simply does not have the population to support a functional PM system AND a forum. The forums by themselves spend days or even weeks without being touched, and the few that are kept alive are done so by a hand full of people. Give them a private messaging system and the forums will die out over night.
2. The coding nightmare that would come with adding in a private messaging system would be insane. First of all, you would need an entire page dedicated to just the PM at the very least. This would have to show in real time who was on. You would also need a system that continuously updates to refresh and show new messages. Also moderation and requirements of rank would be absolutely worthless since with an instant message system, there would be no way to regulate post time to prevent spam.
3. GTQ is not a social hub type of site. It is first and foremost a quiz site. The forums aren't even a necessity. They're an accessory that wasn't even needed for the site to be what it was meant to be. And with the amount of requests we've made and headaches I'm sure we've caused, when will it ever be enough?
4. Let me ask you this: What would be your reason for wanting a private message system? The only reason you'd have for wanting to hide your post is if you were doing something you weren't supposed to do anyway. So what good reason do you have? -
^ Why are you asking why we want a pm system? Then why do any forums have it? It's when sometimes you want to say something in private to someone maybe about personal things that you don't want other people to see. At the moment if we want to talk in private its tricky and we have to use email but a lot of us don't want to post our email address which also probably have our real names in which case we have to make a new email address especially.
I agree with Br0wnie though that its never gonna happen because GTQ guy never comes on and when he does its not to change anything like that. -
@barberbob
1. GTQ doesn't have the population to support a functional PM system AND forum? I don't under-stand. If it's about them both being used often, well, that's not the case here. It's just the debate over implementation of P.M. systems period. And "The forums by themselves spend days or even weeks without being touched, and the few that are kept alive are done so by a hand full of people. Give them a private messaging system and the forums will die out over night." While I do agree some-what with this, I highly doubt the forums would automatically die.
2. First off. I do under-stand that the P.M. system would take a good amount of time dedicated to create it. How-ever, I doubt it'd be a 'nightmare'. Plus, GTQ Guy can always put certain blocks of time to it, say a day every week. It'd put less strain on him, and it's not like we're begging for the system by tonight. Also, "This would have to show in real time who was on. You would also need a system that continuously updates to refresh and show new messages.". First off, I've seen two sites with private messaging systems that don't show, in real time, who's on. At-least, not directly because of the system. Also, doesn't the forum already update to refresh and show new messages?
3. "GTQ is not a social hub type of site. It is first and foremost a quiz site.". I'm just gonna have to say "Bruh" real quick. While it's sole purpose isn't to entertain others by communicating with strangers via internet, it is a major piece. Evolution has changed it. Yes, I said evolution like a biological process, it happens to the best of systems. Enhancing the people's way of communicating should be his first and fore-most priority. On GTQ at-least. Who cares what he does in real life.
And 4. Thank God with a capital G you asked the fourth question. "Let me ask you this: What would be your reason for wanting a private message system? The only reason you'd have for wanting to hide your post is if you were doing something you weren't supposed to do anyway. So what good reason do you have?"
A. Private 1x1 RP's/Soaps.
B. 'Threads' with your hubbies so random people can't bombard them like I can with The Storm.
C. Sharing private info, privately. While I'm certainly not saying it's a good idea to share your zip code and dick pics, but what about e-mail and other stuff? I mean, yeah, we can go to another site to do that kind of stuff, but that's using extraterrestrial conveniences to be lazy.
D. Private conversations. While I under-stand you're using a flawed version of this to keep P.M. systems from happening, I'm sure the_nerdist wants to connect to funniebunnie on help with his depression with-out my constant harassment.
Also. Why can't the P.M. systems just be pulled completely if the Lounge goes an entire day with-out a post? While it might take an extra day or two to pull it off, it's not like asking GTQ Guy to merge GTQ with Twitter.
And again, Mods. Mods could see through all the private messaging systems. This is also a fall-back plan. While there's only a couple of mods who are still active (lol, dun remember who are the mods any-more, so.), new mods could be added. There are still a few good active candidates to be picked. -
The only flawed logic I seen in my post was "B. 'Threads' with your hubbies so random people can't bombard them like I can with The Storm.". Of course, with-out the ability to mass-message, it'd be very annoying and complex to try and make a successful 'thread'. And don't get me started on mass-messaging. They can be dealt with just like trolls on the forums.
Am I done? I think I am. -
this NewbieIf we just banned joker outright GTQ guy wouldn't have to code PMs.
