Eating chocolate releases endorphins, which make you happier. This would relate because
A) We want our lovers to be happy
OR
B) Endorphins are also caused by love, and then we go back to A.
That or the fact that most people love chocolate. Whether it was given as a symbol of love or not, it would still be a popular gift due to the fact that it's a tasty treat.
My last reasoning would be that the sweetness of the chocolate has a symbolic meaning. You're as sweet as the chocolate I have here, and that's why I love you. -
I've said this before, I greatly dislike candy chocoloate. At least anything in a candy block form. A little melted chocolate on a sundae is fine, and I enjoy hot chocolate. But other than that, I don't like it.
So I really don't understand it either, but it seems Selena has a good idea of the reason it seems symbolic to romance. ^-^ -
CHOCOLATE IS AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS.

I agree with Selena's very scientific exploit. I think what Selena said at the bottom in italics is true.
