Apple phone problem

So I forgot my password and I'm completely locked out. I'm supposed to reboot my system or something like that but it says I have to do it with Itunes. I have no idea what Itunes is. I even went on a friends phone to use the internet to see if I could unlock my phone without itunes and it says I can't.
Does anyone know how to unlock an Apple phone without Itunes?
Cause I'd usually just use the 'Power button,volume button and the menu button' to unlock other phones but I saw it doesn't work.
Please help me if you guys know how. -
Itunes is kind of just apples way of buying and downloading music and stuff like that. But I don't actually own any apple products except an Ipod that never turns on. So Itunes is free, and i'm pretty sure you don't need an apple account to reboot something, so I would recommend just downloading it on a computer, rebooting it, and than if you feel like it, uninstall it.
