  1. Gather all the saliva in your spit glands and fire. Shoot her and make her makeup rain pools of colors. Someone ripped her off of you. You were on the ground, facing the ceiling. There was a teacher hollering, scary, an angry shout. The face returned. You tried to claw it. "Erin," the voice was Ryan's. You realized it was a new face, not the old face that clawed you. Your head cleared. You could see things clearly now. Your chin tilts upward. There was a little gray ball right under the lockers. Gray ball. A ball with little ears, little paws, a tail. A mouse... Jerry... JERRY! You motioned to Ryan as you leapt up and made a grab for the mouse. He was missing for days and now he's alive right here in the school. You screamed, Jessica screamed, did the teacher scream too? You screamed out of excitement, Jessica screamed out of pure terror. Typical prep girl.
  2. Jessica tried to stomp on him with her dangerously sharp boots, high heels, whatever they are. "STOP! STOP! STOP!" you hollered. It's funny because there were kids and teachers peeking out of their test rooms. They were all staring at the scene, Jessica doing a little dance. Nice moves. She tried to stomp on it. She fell on her back. She swat it with her hand. Jerry bit her. A surge of pride shot through you. You pumped your hand. "WHOOT!" you cheered. Ryan ran after Jerry who ran down the hall.
  3. "Young man! Stop!" the teacher shouted. You finally realized it was the choir teacher. No wonder he had such a loud scary voice. Tall man with huge chest. "Report back to your testing sites," he commanded. The kids didn't move. The mouse had disappeared. "NOW!" he boomed. They moved. The doors shut. The principal and vice principal walked in. All three of you guys were taken to the office. Jerry was somewhere still in the hall. "Bye Jerry," you whispered before the principal took you by the arm. "I'm innocent!" Ryan shrilled. You burst out giggling.
  4. "Ah, Chris, what are you doing here?" the choir teacher asked Chris as he walked into you guys. His eyes hit yours and then shot back to the choir teacher's. "Uh, sorry Mr. Hansen, I had to go to uh my locker," said Chris. He shook his head. "Great excuse for being fifteen minutes late or what. Go to the choir room and finish your test," he said. Chris nodded and walked off. He looked back at you and then to Jessica who was trying to hide her face. Chris question marked at the scratches on your cheek. You shrugged.
  5. "Hauled into the office, put me in custody for reporting a crime to officer Hansen. I am a witness and innocent," Ryan moaned. You laughed. He was putting on an act. "Escaped prisoners," Ryan whispered into your ear. "Rene escaped." You laughed so hard you snorted. Jessica was glaring and staring somewhere else. "Shh!" the secretary whispered sternly at you. It wasn't that funny, but sometimes in the bad times, you just laughed at everything because you needed it so bad. You couldn't shut up until five minutes later when Mr. Hansen and the principal returned.
  6. Your parents were called. Yours and Jessica's. Ryan was excused after a few questions. Ryan gave you a reassuring smile. "Hey, it's not like I did anything wrong," you snapped. "I'll look for Jerry," he whispered. "No, Mrs. Nelson will escort you to your classroom," the principal said to Ryan.
  7. You left the office with your Mum. Your Mum left for you to finish school. Jessica was suspended for three weeks with a week of clean up duty after she returned. She had only a week and a half to make up missing work during the three weeks. When you went to your locker to pick up a 32 Shadow Clues book, the tape was gone. Later you heard that a couple of eighth grade guys found Jerry in the library and killed the little thing. You nearly cried out. Was it true? No one but a few students knew about Jerry's death. Maybe it was only rumors. But when you went down to the library you found blood and fur on the floor. You reported the blood to the surprised librarian and then ran home crying. Jerry the little mouse is dead.
  8. A week later, you were hanging outside after school. Ryan was lying down on the grass. "Hey," he said. "What," you murmur with your arms crossed. He jumped to his feet and stood next to you. "Jerry's alive," he said. Long silence. Two years passed. "Really?" you asked, your voice soft and small. "Yeah," said Ryan. Another silence. "Then what about the blood and the fur in the library?!" you shrieked. "Fake," said Ryan. "Those guys in eighth grade can't catch a ball, they can't catch a mouse, Jerry's too smart for that," said Ryan. "So, you're just guessing," you mumbled. "No, I mean it, he's alive," said Ryan. "How?" you asked. "He just is." Silence. "He's out there," said Ryan, pointing to the school woods. "He'll get eaten, by foxes, owls, whatever," you moaned. "No, he's okay," said Ryan. There was something about Ryan's voice. He was so sure. You believed him. You lay down. 6th grade. Jerry was okay. Everything would be okay. ~stay tuned for Erin's seventh grade years~ I hope you will!
