  1. The goblin was right. About fifteen seconds later, the dirty trio of Alex, Ash, and Gumbo came in. I was about to comment on their looks when I noticed a girl trailing behind them. "Sarah? What are you doing here?" Sarah looked as perfect as ever. She still had her rich, caramel hair and her pretty complexion. "This guy named Michael asked me if I knew where you were. I lied, though I saw it in your future. For some strange reason he knew I lied and then sicked his friends on me. I came here as soon as possible. Then I pretty much saved those three's lives." She pointed at Alex, Ash, and Gumbo. "Bombed the lizatour. You're welcome." Ash sniffed his arm and made a face. "Can I take a shower?" Gritzo grinned. "I don't know. Can you?" Oh, the old annoying teacher card. Ash turned grim. "I will pee on all things you love." Gritzo's grin vanished as he pointed to a door that was invisible a few moments ago. "Straight, first door to your right. Extra clothes will be there if you ask. Brownies sew very fast." Sarah sat down on the mushroom chair. "I know a few mermaids. I can get your Compor for you, if you'd like." I was about to ask how she knew about that when I remembered she was a seer. "Are you sure?" I furrowed my brow. "You don't have to do that." Sarah laughed; an angelic sound. "Are you kidding me? I haven't been in this much action in forever. I'll be okay. Actually, I'm about to head out." Alex looked surprised. "But it's getting dark out." Sarah shook her head. "Puh-leeze. There are worst things out there than darkness." She saluted us with her pointer and middle finger and was off into the Banished Provinces.
  2. Gritzo was nice enough to let us sleep the night. From first glance, his home looked small and untidy, but once I got used to it it became rather quaint. "I have a few extra rooms you guys can use. Before my wife died we were intended to have children so we renovated. Unfortunately, now the space is just a waste. Feel free to do whatever you please to make you feel comfortable. And if you need anything, just ask the brownies." After Ash was cleaned up, Alex went to do the same. Gumbo had to stay out by the entrance because Gritzo didn't want the smell to stay permanently in the household. I glanced up at him every once in a while to try and catch a sign of him wanting to talk to me in private about our bargain, but nothing came up. Giving up, I exited the main room and searched for a room of my liking. One particular door caught my eye. It was a grassy green, reminding me of Sam's eyes.
  3. I walked to the door and turned the knob. I peeked my head in and found an aquatic themed room. Walls were painted blue with life like sea creatures on them. If you actually looked close enough it looked like the critters were moving. The floor below was made up of transparent glass and you could see a big hole of dirt stretching far below to who knows where. The bed was decorated with different shades of blue, looking like easy going waves at a pleasant night at the beach. There were starfishes and seashells scattered around everywhere. It felt like you were somewhat in Bikini Bottom. I sat on the bed, which was quite hard. I would have loved the room, but if I can't sleep on the bed then it's a no go. I exited and went across the hall to a blood red door that came with a silver knocker.
  4. I opened it up and went inside where a cool gush of air went through me. This place was more simple, but elegant. Complicated, but not mind boggling. The color scheme of the room was black, red, white, and gray. The room was furnished with a bookcase, a dresser, a studying table, and a bed. Wrapped around the bed's headboard and footboard were strings of enchanting lights that danced around your eyes, making you feel like it was Christmas time. This was the place. I hopped onto the bed and it almost swallowed me up. It was rather soft and lumpy, but I could deal with it. I lied down staring at he black ceiling. And then a wave of emotion hit me like a bullet. Christofer. The place reminded me of Christofer. I felt my lips tremble and I was about to start crying when I heard a noise.
  5. I sat up reflexively and listened very carefully. The noise wasn't very big, but it definitely came from inside this room. "I know you're here," I said aloud. It was a really big Tom Cruise moment for me because only spies say that kind of stuff. I heard scuffling around me, and then suddenly what looked like a gummy bear on steroids was thrown at my face. I screamed as I fell back onto the bed. The thing stepped all over my face until it hopped off. I sat back up, half scared, half flustered. I looked around hoping to see what it was but I couldn't see anything. "Hello." I turned around in a flash and saw a crowd of tiny people with pointy ears standing on the bed. "Are you guys the brownies?" I asked, trying to hide my relief. One of the brownies in the front stepped forward. "Yes. I am Sir Honeydew and we are the brownies for Master Gritzo. Would you like anything?" Fancy. I felt bad for asking these little creatures to do stuff for me, but I figured it was their job so I guess I could live with it. "I kind of need some new clothes, please." I didn't even have time to breath before the brownies were out of sight.
  6. I looked through the rows of books in which all were about the Core. No romance, no young adult, no action, mystery. I bent down on the very last section of the shelf and slid my finger across the spines and titles. I let out a sharp breath when I found a book entitled, "Beneath the Core". I pulled out the tattered old book and brought it back to the bed. It has to say something about the Underbelly. I spent maybe an hour skimming through the whole book; the index, the glossary, citations, publication, table of contents, and the time line. Every single freaking chapter. I came up with no luck whatsoever. Disappointed and on the verge of just giving up, I put the book back. I turned to go to the bed and found brand new clothes laying atop of the sheets. I peered around for the brownies but they were nowhere to be seen. Okay, here's the game plan: get changed faster than the speed of light and hope that nobody walks through the door and sees me in what I don't want them to see. Yeah, sounds good.
  7. At the time, maybe the whole situation would have been funny. I felt like a dancing monkey, trying to take on and off my shirt and pants as quickly as possible. The brownies even had the generosity to sew me a new bra and underwear. And now I probably won't be able to look at them the same way ever again. I was about to put on my pajama bottoms that the brownies also made when there was a knock on the door. Alex's voice made my cheeks go red as he called my name. "Um, hold on!" I yelled, very aware that if he decided not to do so then he'd see me in my underwear. I got on my pajamas and was about to open the door when I saw my dirty undergarments on the floor. "Are you okay?" Alex asked. I laughed nervously and said, "Yeah, just hold on a minute." I paced back and forth and kicked the stuff under the bed. "Psst, brownies. If you're here and you hear me then get the stuff under the bed, okay? And don't make it noticeable, thanks." I smoothed down my hair and then turned the door knob.
  8. Alex was sitting down against the wall across the door. He got up and smiled. "Hi." One simple high was enough to make my body tingle. "Hi," I squeaked out. He laughed and said, "Can I come in?" I stepped aside and gestured him to do so. I followed him and shut the door behind me. Alex sat on the edge of my bed and played around with the lights. "Nice room." I sat down too, leaving a gap between us. "How was fighting the lizatour?" Alex laughed unsteadily. "Well, excluding where I got its guts all over me, ruining my perfectly good hair and my clothes, all was well." I smiled slightly and then fished for other things to talk about. I seriously wished we could go back to the times where all we had to worry about was school. I sat down cris-crossed apple sauce and tried looking occupied by inspecting my nails. "Princess." Alex got closer to me, but we still didn't touch. "Tell me what I can do to make this easier for you."
  9. I didn't exactly know what he meant by "this", but I wanted him so badly. I tried looking for the right words to say so that I didn't sound melodramatic, but I guess dramatic situations call for dramatic dialogue. "I want you to stay here with me. I just want to see your face and smell you and feel you and hear your voice and just have you with me." Alex's jaw flexed and he closed his eyes for a brief moment. "Alex?" I suddenly had the idea that I said something wrong and that he was going to reject me. "I mean, you don't have to stay. I'm not forcing you or anything, so if you want to go then"”" "Shh." He put his finger to his lips and I stopped speaking. He mimicked my sitting style and we sat across from each other on the bed, him just looking at me. "Do I look really crappy or something?"
  10. Alex chuckled and touched my hand. "Can you just shut up and let me embrace this moment?" "What moment?" Alex looked the room over again. "This is probably the first time we've been alone together without having to worry about anything extreme. We can relax and just hangout like we used to. And no, you don't look crappy today. You never do. You look better than ,e. And you should take that as the best compliment you've ever received in your life and the remaining years of it." I laughed and put my hand to his cheek. "Arrogance." Alex smiled and held onto my wrists tenderly. "You love my arrogance. Modesty just isn't as fun." I cringed and took my hand away. Modesty reminded me of Christofer. Another part of my memory zoomed back into me with so much emotion that I sat back against the headboard, panting. I squeezed my forehead which was aching so immensely it felt like somebody was slicing my brain in two with a chainsaw. The memory flashed in my mind as if I were reliving it, like a a race car speeding down the highway. The sadness, the pain, the misery"”it was all so real.
  11. Alex was freaking out. So much for treasuring the moment. But he guessed he could make an exception since she did go unconscious. Alex started shaking her, hoping she'd wake, but it was no good. It was like she died. And yet, her heart was still beating and she was still breathing. Alex focused all of his energy into going into her head, but something awfully strong was blocking his power. She didn't know how to do that, did she?" He was about to call for help when she stirred. "Wake up, wake up, wake up," Alex prayed under his breath. Suddenly she burst up from her unconsciousness with a scream. Her face was wet from tears and she started bawling her eyes out. Alex held her by the shoulders, hating to see her cry like this. Before he could ask what was wrong, she folded up into his arms and said, "I'm so sorry, Alex. I'm so sorry."
