  1. Viker stares in horror at the broken place. With a shudder, this reminds you of something . . . Yes, that's it! Your parents had found something similar to this, and when you got home from the park with friends, they took you away. At least, your mom did. Your father was injured very badly and you three went to Aunt Mill's. Somehow she cured your father in a week. Seeming petrified, your mother decided to move, and your father agreed, so you were here now. Perhaps . . . Was it the evil?
  2. "They came," Viker said, looking frozen. "Chris and the rest." Chris? You freeze as well, unease rippling through you. Ben turned. "_______," he tells you, "Chris is the leader of the evil. Vike is the leader of us, the good." He unmounted Storm Leap, and you got off Winter Shine. Viker looked at you. "Your aunt Mill saved the worse of it."
  3. "Aunt Mill? How---" You were cut off by Ben. "She knows," he said. "Mill was the old leader, before Viker took her place. The leaders are powerful, _________." You remember how your father was taken into a room, and how Aunt Mill had taken a strange stick and bottles of liquids in with her, and you weren't allowed in. She had tried to save Uncle Night in this way; he didn't make it, and that was one reason why I tried to get in. I jerked out of my memories as Viker and Ben left, waking in the house. I followed, leading Winter Shine. Viker searched for something, and soon in his hand you saw a stick. He waved it and said something unaudible, and some of the items went back in place. Others, like broken vases, had to be cleaned up and thrown away. Within moments the work was done, and the animals were sent to their places. Viker turned to you, holding out a different stick. It was arm's length, and smooth with intricate carvings. The wood was soft but strong willow.
  4. "Look," instructed Ben. "I'm going to teach you several simple spells before we start the real deal, fighting and potions and all." He snapped his fingers, and a wand flew to him, longer than yours, but not by much, it was birch. "Repeat after me," he said. "Extrelkis!" he shouted. "Extrelkis!" you repeated. Both your wands shot something out. It looked like a blue-white mist. When it touched an object (you pointed at a picture on the wall) the picture clattered to the floor. "Extrelkis makes enemies fall," Ben explained. Viker came up. "Try this," he said, pointing his pine wand at the picture. "Uxstrara!" The picture came back to the wall. "To return things to their normal spot," he said. You looked at some leaves fallen from a plant. "Uxstrara!" they came back onto the tree and became green.
  5. You nodded. "Pratice that," said Ben. "Vike will educate you in fighting and we share potions, I do cures, medicines, and poisons, and he does everything else."
  6. You nod. "Extrelkis! Uxstrara!" You repeat this with several objects in the house. Suddenly, you sense a shadow behind you. "Extrelkis!" You yell, pointing the wand at the figure. Viker toppled over. "Good," he said as he got to his feet. "In a battle, you must keep your sense alert. Your wolf skills must have done some of it."
  7. Pleased, you continue practicing, until you hear a voice. "Astrukilo!" It was Ben, and he was pointing his wand at a figure in the shadows. The figure was brought out, Ethan's by the spell, and it revealed itself to be Chris.
  8. Without thinking, you use your spell "Extrelkis." Chris falls, but he says "Magnalo" and somehow he floats in air, landing on his feet and still in balance. "Vacquate!" That spell came from Chris. You felt an invisible web wrap around you, and you were tugged by an unseen force towards Chris . . .
