The constitutional convention was held in May of 1787. The purpose of this convention was to create the Constitution of America. The constitution is a written plan of government. After 2 years it was adopted in 1789. At the constitutional convention two plans where proposed. The Virginia plan and the New Jersey plan. The Virginia plan was a proposal by Virginia. It was a proposal that congress be given greater power over the states. That larger state would have more representatives in congress than smaller states. This is why each state has a different number of representatives. The New Jersey Plan was different. It was a proposal that each state should have the same number of representatives in congress. That meant that big and small states would have the same number of representatives. This is why we have two senators for each state. There are three branches of government. There is the legislative branch which makes laws and establishes taxes. The judicial branch which interprets or decides what laws mean and decides if laws follow the constitution. Also there is the executive branch which makes sure laws are carried out and commands the armed forces. Two parts of the constitution are the Preamble and the Bill of Rights. The Preamble is the introductions to the constitution. It begins We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare and secure the blessing of liberty to ourselves and our prosperity do ordain and establish this constitution for the Unites States of America. The Bills Of Rights which are the first 10 amendments to the constitution was ratified in 1791. Amendment 1 Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. I just got word that President Jefferson asked the congress to fund an expedition to go west. It is really exciting to think what the west will be like. I keep thinking of all new and strange things I might see. Yes I Meriwether Lewis plan on taking this Journey. I hope to see everything that Daniel Boone and other pioneers before me saw. I wonder if we will be taking the Wilderness Road or will we go another way? Will we stop and stay the night near the frontier?
