"I've felt the exact same way. I hated not knowing if you were okay. I despised only having prayers to ensure your safety. It killed me being so far from you."
The pilot checked the radar. "Heading into some storms, kiddo. Better get off soon." -
"Yeah, same with me...hey I have to go but stay safe, know I love you and that I'll be waiting for you." He smiled, blowing a kiss over the phone.
-
"I love you too, Charlie. I'll see you soon." He reluctantly pressed the red button once more, turning the radio off.
"Is that the real reason why you're goin' to the US, kid?"
Alden stared at his feet and nodded. "And I need this arm fixed..."
"Right. You keep telling me that," the pilot chuckled and resumed navigating the shuttle through the ominous storm clouds. -
Itd taken the pilot some time, but he finally found a working airport. It was small, made for two passanger planes only, but the runway was large enough and there were no other planes around. He sent a request for landing to the tower, was told her could, and slowly made his way down.
-
Charlie hung up, and went back to the formation. He was so excited he could barely contain himself. After getting checked he went running back to his tent.
"Hey Lisa, guess what I-" He stopped mid-sentence when he couldn't find her in the tent. "Lisa? Lisa where are you?" Worry returned, and he hoped she was just at the mess hall or restroom. He went to search the grounds, calling out her name. -
D: Oh nu!
The rest of the plane ride was spent in silence, the steady whirring of the engines making Alden sleepy.
"Wake up. We're here," a gruff voice roused the young Brit from his slumber. A calloused hand shook him until his eyes flickered open.
Alden rubbed his eyes and stretched, ignoring the pain it caused him in his wounded arm. "Thank you," he smiled at the pilot.
"No, thank you," the rough man replied. "You and your little guy friend over here reminded me that this world still has some hope remaining."
"What's your name?" Alden asked. It was an impulse; he'd never taken a favor from a person without later learning their name.
"Leigh. Last name's irrelevant."
"Thank you, Leigh," Alden took off the headset and left it on the seat. "Thank you for everything." With that, the brunette exited the jet. -
When they touched down, the were escorted out by the man who'd given the speech. They were led far away from the airport, and Camilla began to wonder if the man acually knew where he was going.
-
"Charlie!" The little girl came running up to the young man, hugging his leg. "Lisa! Where were you? You scared me..." He pulled her into his arms in a hug. "I saw a plane!" She grinned. "It just landed!" "A plane?" His eyes darted toward the base's airport. "Really? Can you show me where it is?" He smiled and she nodded. They started heading over to the hanger.
-
He walked out onto the cracked concrete, his legs a bit shaky from being deprived of solid ground for so long. He glanced around, running a hand through his hair. It was all too familiar... The pine trees, the tall green grass... This was America. Alden was going to be with Charlie... at last.
-
Charlie hurried, looking carefully for where the plane had landed. "Over there!" Lisa pointed, and he looked up to see a jet plane in the distance, and the silhouette of a young British man. He grinned, running out toward him. "Alden!"
-
"Right then." he said, turning to face everyone. "Men...and ladies....while here you are to be respectful of your superiors, which is pretty much everyone except you. You will show extreme respect to the American soldiers, no telling what a little disrespect could do in these times."
-
Alden's head snapped up at the sound of that voice. That beautiful, beautiful voice. There, just ahead, he spotted Charlie. His face lit up immediately, his eyes tearing up from all of the elation within him. He set out to close the distance between them as well.
-
It was like a dream to him, that he wasn't but a few measly yards from the man he loved. Finally, he reached him, pure joy and gratitude elevating from his being. "Aldie...my Alden." He wrapped his arms around him tightly, as if to never let go. It was like going without water for so long and feeling a wave crash over.
He kissed away the tears, letting their foreheads touch. "I'm so glad you're here..." The genuine relief in his voice couldn't be more obvious. -
"Charlie..." Alden held him close, so close that if they were to be pressed together any more they would simple meld into one being. It was surreal to finally be with him... He smiled, tasting the saltiness of his own tears. He stared into the other's eyes.
"I am too... I am too..." He pressed his lips gently against Charlie's, feeling that he had finally returned home. Wherever Charlie was, that was where his home was. Alden felt his love's strong arms around him. He knew he was safe now; he was whole once more. -
"Now, I've just sent for a couple of vehicles to get up to the nearest base, so you guess can mull around and do whatever it is you do until they get here." There was much "mulling around" as he put it, most stayed where they were as if they're feet were glued to the ground. Some sat, Camilla being one of them.
