Dogstar's Fray (ch 2)

Young Ivypaw ventures out into the cold, bitter leafbare in attempts to wash the sour taste of mousebile from her mouth by the still running part of the stream. Meanwhile, Melting Snow and a few other cats plan to steal the kits from the Snakeclan camp. As the shes go off to set a distraction, Melting Snow and Rabbit's Foot speak about their plan to take over the forest, clan by clan.

"With the kitten loot to increase the broods, I am sure to be appointed Co-commander after the oh-so saddening death of Winter Ice.." The dominant male said in a sarcastic tone. The sarcasm turned to seriousness with an extreme change of attitude. "When we bond with the third by helping them rebuild, we are bound to take over the forest.. clan, by clan, by clan."

  1. Ivypaw dipped her tongue into the bit of the stream that hadn't yet frozen. The sting of mouse bile haunted her nose and her mouth, desperate to get the flavor out. She'd just finished her last duty for today- helping the elders with ticks. Ticks were always relatively worse in leafbare, as they find anything to leech on to before nature's harshest season would commence.
  2. The long, lilac-point shecat was still more than sour with the duty Branchleg ordered her off to at that time of night. She had just been on a long trek through deep, cold snow, managing to catch a few scrawny mice and a squirrel before returning to her clan. There were plenty more apprentices, plenty more warriors, but Branchleg's unexplained grudge kept Ivypaw in the target zone.
  3. When she decided she had washed the terrible taste away the best she could, the she completely understood her fate, her cold voyage back to camp. It was dark, the moon lighting up the sky, and she was far from camp. The stream had one place that it never froze over- where the water was at it's lowest. It was one of the few sips of water you could get in leafbare on the vast Snakeclan territory.
  4. Ivypaw took a brave inhale, turning around from the stream and struggling through the deep snow. Snakeclan always had terribly deep snow and insanely harsh leafbares for no reason apparent, leaving it the most dreaded time of the year. When the tribe reigned on, during leafbare, Snakeclan leaders would have to choose only a select few volunteers to journey to the moonlit gathering.
  5. Ivypaw had to walk quickly. It was troubling and tiring, but it kept her above the snow. Desperation tugged her heartstrings and frostbite nipped at her paws, hard and callused from the leafbare's ice and the greenleaf's brambles.

  7. Four alleycats sat in a square inside an old owl's nest, up into an a grand oak tree. They were huddled closely, not just to converse but to trap the warmth in a pocket they could share. The winter was unbearable. When a kitten died, an innocent member of the Syndicate was sent to investigate Snakeclan's camp, typically ordered to not return until a fresh clanblood kit was clenched in their jaws.
  8. The biggest, longest-furred of the four stated something out in a very dominant tone. "You all learned how to walk on top the snow in the winter. Two of you go and distract, two of us go and steal. We need these kittens. The broods are running terribly low."
  9. "I and Rabbit's Foot will steal. Red Carnation and Pelican of Sea will distract." The two females told off to distract spat in disapproval but silenced themselves after a spat from the dominant male. "Yes, Melting Snow.." They groaned, hopping from the abandoned owl hole.
  10. Rabbit's Foot and Melting Snow huddled close. "With the kitten loot to increase the broods, I am sure to be appointed Co-commander with the oh-so saddening death of Winter Ice.." The dominant male said in a sarcastic tone. Sarcasm turned to seriousness with an extreme change of attitude. "When we bond with the third by helping them rebuild, we are bound to take over the forest.. clan, by clan, by clan." He sneered, giving Rabbit's Foot a signifying glance as Melting Snow jumped from the owl tree, followed just behind by Rabbit's foot in the direction of the clan camp- the jackpot.
