This is the next chapter in Dawnkit’s life, where she becomes and apprentice and then, a warrior. We’re focusing on three toms, Eaglepaw, Sunpaw, and Hailpaw. Sorry, there’s not much Hailpaw in this.

  1. "Dawnpaw! Moonpaw! Lightningpaw! Dawnpaw! Moonpaw! Lightningpaw!" Your chest swelled with pride as you heard your apprentice name cheered by the Clan, along with your siblings. “Sunpaw! Eaglepaw! Hailpaw!” The other 3 apprentices were Sunpaw, son of Willowstar, Eaglepaw, son of Alderheart(a well-known warrior and Emberclaw’s rival), and Hailpaw, son of Whiteclaw. Your mother had pride in her eyes, while you father maintained a happy expression, but you knew him well enough to know he would give anything to bounce up and down like a kit. You would, too. It was just, just so . . . exciting wasn't the right word . . . Amazing, perhaps? You were assigned Willowstar as your mentor, she was the leader. She and you mother were good friends--you couldn't help but think there was some secret between them, and your imaginative mind loved to think of stories. You looked at Willowstar. The tabby she-cat was swelling with happiness; you could tell. Your brother and sister also had good mentors: Moonpaw got Hollyberry, the lucky cat, and Lightningpaw got--surprisingly-- Needleclaw, the tough one.
  2. Your eye caught Sunpaw: The cute ginger tom, the son of Willowstar. You didn't know why, but you were drawn to his loud cheers, the confidence in his voice that you'd always heard when he spoke to your mother, father, or Willowstar. He had become an apprentice just after you; so you knew both his kit-voice and now, his apprentice-voice: Same confidence. You admired that.

You shook your head and looked away, then turned to Willowstar. *She's Sunpaw's mother,* you thought, then shook your head again, this time in disgust. *Why can't I get him out of my mind?* "What're we doing, Willowstar?" you asked. She paused. "First, we have to tour the territory." You nodded, and listened as Willowstar continued. "But go kind of slow; my legs aren't good for this, even though it's green-leaf." "Yes, Willowstar," you replied. You followed her at a slow pace out into the forest.
  4. You saw the borders, and Willowstar went to the last stop: The RiverClan border. You saw a flash of brown fur, with swirls and streaks of dark brown. You spotted the glare of green eyes and before you knew it, a RiverClan apprentice was padding to the border. You had to stifle the urge to twitch you whiskers as the apprentice put on a low voice, probably trying to mimic his Leader's authoritative voice. "Fellow StreamClan cats," he said importantly, "may I ask what you are doing on the border?" Willowstar looked at the apprentice hard. "Don't go looking for more trouble, Reedpaw." *Reedpaw.* Something clicked in your head. Didn't your father once say that Reedpaw was a RiverClan apprentice he met once at a Gathering? And that he nearly caused a fight between the two Clans? Your fur bristled and you eyed him suspiciously. "She sure looks like she needs it," Reedpaw said, examining your position. "This is a border, not a fight." You glared at him as he spoke. "Yes, and you sure need to learn that you aren't her mentor," Willowstar retorted. Then she turned to you. "Come on, Dawnpaw. Let's get back to camp." You nodded. You pricked an ear as you heard a whisper from Reedpaw. It…
  5. Suddenly, you hear Willowstar’s yowl, “Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather around Highrock for a clan meeting!” Cats started slinking out as Willowstar continued. “We need to plan an attack on RiverClan. They have been stealing our prey.” Willowstar took a breath. "I will say now those who will come with me on the attack," Willowstar announced. "Sunpaw, Eaglepaw, Needleclaw, Berryleaf, Amberflight, Ivypool(Sunpaw’s sister), Dawnpaw, and myself. Today, I would like all of you to sharpen your fighting skills. Stormheart(the deputy), will be in charge while I'm gone."
  6. "The clan meeting is dismissed," Willowstar leaped down from the hightree. Oakkit shot a worried glance at you. Eaglekit followed Emberclaw and began asking questions.
  7. *A day later* The sun was setting, the time for battle drew near. The clan was uneasy. Eaglekit made his way to you. "Hi, Dawnkit. Aren't you excited for the battle?"
  8. Willowstar and the other cats in the fighting party crept over to the RiverClan border. They start to fight. Suddenly, you notice Eaglepaw, running to attack who he thought was a RiverClan warrior, but was really Frostberry, a pregnant queen. What do you do?
  9. (Only answer this question if you ignored it.) You turn back to the queen and see a large tom fighting off your clanmate, which turns out to be Eaglepaw. Frostberry is whining loudly.
  10. (Only answer this question if you helped the queen.) You rushed to the queen and hissed at your clanmate. "What are you doing?! This queen is pregnant!" Sunpaw came over, and both of you grabbed Frostberry by her scruff and a large tom approached. "What are you doing with her?!" He hissed. "I'm trying to help her!" "Oh, sorry... Come to our med. cat." You dragged her to the medicine cat. The med cat asked you what happened. You say:
  11. (Only answer this question if you helped the queen) You hear screaming. Frostberry was wailing loudly, not only from the wounds. She was kitting! The large tom(Emberclaw) walked a bit closer to the queen and took her to the med cat. (If she wasn't there already.) Everyone stopped fighting. You...
  12. (Answer this if you helped Frostberry) A bit later Frostberry had had two kits- soft squeaks came from the place where she was laying. She turned to you. "Dawnpaw, right? I decided you're allowed to name one of my kits.." She touched a white she kit with ginger splotches with her tail. "This one." You say, “I want to name her… Mosskit, because she was born on RiverClan territory.”
  13. “That’s a great name, Dawnpaw! Tell Willowstar… your warrior name…. should be… Dawnflower.” Suddenly, someone rushed at Frostberry, a RiverClan tom named Poisonscar, and stroked at her. Frostberry fell to the ground dead, but Mosskit was safe in your arms.
  14. Willowstar gave a long yowl. “ThunderClan retreat! We need to bury Frostberry and take care of Mosskit.” When ThunderClan got back to camp, Willowstar said, “Let all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather below Highrock for a clan meeting! Two apprentices are ready to become warriors. Dawnpaw, Sunpaw come up. I, Willowstar, leader of ThunderClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on these two apprentices. They have trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend them to you as warriors in their turn. Dawnpaw, Sunpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend this Clan, even at the cost of your lives?” *I know what Fernpool would say, “Make your clan proud.” So….* “I do.” Dawnpaw says. “I do!” Sunpaw says, nearly drowning out your reply. “ Then by the powers of StarClan I give you your warrior names: Sunpaw, from this moment you will be known as Sunfur. StarClan honors your bravery and strength, and we welcome you as a full warrior of ThunderClan. Dawnpaw, from this moment you will be called Dawnflower. StarClan honors your compassion and your kindness, and we welcome you as a full warrior of ThunderClan. Dawnflower!…
